Celebrate birdsong on International Dawn Chorus Day, May 6, 2012

Not all of the bird song is, well, song. Woodpeckers provide the percussion for the morning (and afternoon!) concert in my own backyard.

My friend Mike is a morning show producer here in town. He told me once that he leaves for work around 4 a.m. and he’s always surprised at the  number of birds chirping at the hour of the morning. In total darkness. I think he used the word “eerie” to describe it.

Back when Scout was sick and we were up every hour or so all night long, I got to hear what he was talking about. Three in the morning, and Scout and I would  be in the backyard, he not sure what he wanted to do or where, me following around with the flashlight, and a cacophony of birds providing the soundtrack.

Eerie. But so very cool, too. [Read more...]

Most popular – and wacky – pet names for 2011

Most popular pet names of 2011

Bella, Bailey, Max or Charlie - chances are if you have a cat, dog or bird, that’s what you call your pet. At least that’s what Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), the nation’s oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, found when it went through its database of more than 485,000 insured pets to determine the top pet names of 2011.

The list shows a trend towards names that double as human names, from Max and Charlie to the “Twilight”-themed Bella. Of the nearly half a million pets insured by VPI, only 13 were named “Fido,” and just 17 came running to the name “Spot.”

But there are lot of pet owners who went for more … er … untraditional names. Like Almost-A-Dog, Franco Furter, Stinkie Mcstinkerson, Sir Seamus McPoop or Audrey Shepburn for dogs, or Ozzy Pawsbourne, Mr. Meowgi, Murderface, Fuglee or Scruffernutter for cats.

How creative is YOUR pet’s name? Stranger than, say, Seargent Boom Boom or Otto F Domesticus? Do share!

New Year’s resolutions for animal lovers: #2 – Adopt a pet

Wally is a Brown Agouti/White/American Shorthair guinea pig looking for a home. You can learn more at the Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue in Washington, DC. (www.mgpr.org)

As we get ready for the new year, here’s another New Year’s resolution for animal lovers: Adopt a pet!

Before Christmas, we had lots of discussion about pet shop dogs and animal rescue:

But did you know that you can also adopt ferrets and bunnies and birds and guinea pigs and every other kind of pet?

Before you head to the pet shop to help perpetuate the puppy mill (or other pet mill) cycle, check out your local animal shelter and animal rescue groups for your new furry companion. With millions of animals euthanized every year simply because they don’t have homes, resolve in 2012 to adopt rather than buy from a pet shop.

You can Google the kind of animal you’re looking for  – “ferret rescue” or “bird rescue” or “gerbil rescue” – or simply go to Petfinder.com and search for adoptable pets in your area. You can also check your local animal shelter by contacting your local animal control office.

Tomorrow: resolution #3 – Be a better pet owner.

Oh, that we could learn to get along with each other the way Fum and Gerba have! Fum (which means “smoke” in Catalan) and Gerba (“frost”) are both about a year old. The pair live and romp together in Tarragona, Spain. You can see more from them on their Facebook page.
