Writing, technology and the beauty of the pen

I'm an avid scribbler. I'm constantly making notes in small notebooks tucked in my purse, on scrap paper and receipts, and when paper can't be found, I write on my hand.I joke a lot about how I hate technology, but that's not necessarily true. I hate the way technology has become a crutch for most Americans, replacing our own ability to think, to solve problems, and to record thoughts and ideas. So I love this TEDTalk by Master Penman Jake Weidmann, in which he extolls not only the … [Read more...]

If your dog could talk, would he speak like a preschooler?

Yup, my dog has a blog.

A friend posted on Facebook today: "Who decided that if dogs were able to speak and type they would do so with a speech impediment that makes you feel illterate trying to read it?"I understand what she means. As part of a community of dog writers, I see a lot of pets with blogs, Twitter and Facebook accounts, and to be honest, sometimes I have no idea what they're trying to say.  Dat for that, da for the, and a host of grammatical errors (like "i has not" and "U gotted") sometimes mean I … [Read more...]

How I spent my summer vacation

I didn't go on vacation. I just pretended like I did.

I sit here at my computer, trying to come up with a topic to blog about, something animal-related, something spiritual. It's been a while since I wrote anything for Patheos, wrote anything at all for that matter.I confess: I took a break, a summer vacation from writing, if you will.  A little time off from wordcrafting isn't a bad thing. It's like ice cream. You love it, but too much can make you so sick you never want to see a hot fudge sundae again. So you abstain for a while, until the … [Read more...]

Just another day at the Funny Farm (video)

Regular readers of my columns and personal blog (ie: my friends and family) know there's a reason I've dubbed my house "the funny farm." Not only do I write humor ... it's just madness over here. Disorganization, clutter and chaos. And that's just me. Add in the animals and it's a non-stop barrel of fun. (No, I don't have a monkey, but that would be fun, wouldn't it?)So I thought you'd enjoy this little video I captured of our rescue pup Bailey. I think she learned this trick from the … [Read more...]

Writing, organization, and giant balls of dog hair

nancy french novel photo

Fellow Patheos blogger Nancy French posted a photo today of her novel in progress, note cards spread across the table in perfect organization as she works on plotting her story. As a writer always working on book and article ideas, all I could think when I saw the photo was … man, she's got a clean house. Where are the paw prints on the table? Where’s the cat rearranging the notecards while the dog is shredding couch pillows?I'm always amazed to see other writers' creative process, especi … [Read more...]

A year of animals, blogging and Patheos

Bandit and Bailey, in a rare moment of calm, sit for a photo. A great deal of chicken was required for this.

I was excited this week to receive a notecard in the mail from the staff at Patheos, congratulating me on my one year anniversary blogging about animals and faith.Really? A whole year? Where did the time go?I love writing here. The columnists, bloggers and editors have been kind and welcoming, and I love hearing from readers who have shared photos, shared thoughts and engaged in discussions on a variety of animal-related topics. It's been a nice change from my decade-plus experience … [Read more...]
