“Hellbound?”–controversial, critically acclaimed, but Canadian? No way!

There’s a reason why I steer clear of government programs designed to facilitate or protect homegrown art. On one level, such programs lead to a climate of mediocrity where artists are supported not because they’re exceptionally gifted but merely because they fall into whatever category the government has deemed important this year. By way of [...]

Two (make that three) good reasons to watch this “Hellbound?” outtake

First reason: It offers a fantastic introduction to Rene Girard’s mimetic theory of violence and religion, delivered by none other than Michael Hardin, mimetic theorist and co-founder of Preaching Peace. Second reason: Preaching Peace is currently experiencing financial difficulties, so we are giving 50% of the proceeds from this video to support their ministry. Third [...]

Does the horror film “You’re Next” portend the end of America?

Anyone familiar with Rene Girard and mimetic theory will know that one of the signals you’re reading a persecution text–a text that seeks to obscure or distort communal violence against a sacrificial victim–is a breakdown in distinctions necessary to the social order. The new cutting edge of horror?

I’ve always had a fascination with horror movies. In fact, one of the first things that piqued my interest in filmmaking was reading about legendary makeup artist Jack Pierce, Lon Chaney, Jr., Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and the Universal monster movies. (The book pictured here was one of my favorites.) Long before I’d seen any [...]
