Acts 18: The Way of God

Acts 18: The Way of God May 31, 2011

What is the way of God? Acts 18 shares the following on this issue:

24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

27 When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.

The way of God included not only the teachings of the Old Testament but also the teachings of Jesus (what we now have in the New Testament). These Scriptures are not only words on a page but how God chose to communicate with us as people. Knowing Scripture provides both humility and confidence in the spiritual life. Humility in knowing God’s greatness versus our weakness and confidence that we understand what he has revealed to us in this world.

These traits allow us, as Apollos did, to speak boldly for our Lord with both those who believe and those who do not. We need not be ashamed of our Lord; rather, our goal is to know the truth, live it, and to share it with all who will listen.
