Ezra 8: Fasting for Protection

Ezra 8: Fasting for Protection August 4, 2013

There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. -Ezra 8:21

Have you ever fasted? Many of the great leaders of the Bible did. Ezra once proclaimed a fast for safety before leaving the Ahava Canal for Jerusalem.

This time fasting was not just personal, but a fast by the community of those returning to their homeland. They prayed for a safe journey for themselves, their children, and their possessions.

Much could be said about this time of prayer, but one quick thought stands out–God answered this prayer.

God desires for his people to come to him and devote prayer. This can even include times of fasting. When we do, we can rest assured God is listening and will answer according to his perfect will.
