New Zoo Revue

New Zoo Revue October 2, 2010

I went to the National Zoo this afternoon with the boys and their cousin Jesse.  We were headed to the panda exhibit to do some research on their habitat.  Along the way, I heard some interesting scientific hypotheses.  Here are the best three:

On Reproduction: On the way to the pandas, we saw Prezewalskis horses, which are extinct in the wild.  I told the boys that zoos around the world are breeding the horses so they can reintroduce them into the northern regions of China.

Jesse: “I hope that all of the horses in the zoos are females.”

Tara: “Why, Jess?”

Jesse: “Because the females can make babies.”

Zach:  “But you need males too!”

Tara: “That’s right.  Why do you need the males?”

Ezra : “You need the males to pee on the females.”

On Scientific Research: The zoo no longer gives out the panda activity guide that I had promised the boys we would use to “conduct our research.”  They were all disappointed, Zach the most:  “But Mom, if we don’t write in a science journal, we’re not gonna learn anything.

On Economic Development: While looking at the beehives that conservationists are encouraging local Chinese people to build in order to preserve panda habitats, I explained, “This way they can sell the honey and wax instead of cutting down the trees for money.”

Ezra thought about that for a second and concluded, “Oh, cuz there’s money inside Chinese trees, right?”

Henrietta and Freddie never said anything that funny, now did they?
