Comfort Reading and Cooler Climes…

books1

It is officially hot enough to melt your shoes out there, so lots of time to enjoy a good book in the a/c! Or better yet, take that good book and seek higher ground. Curling up in a cabin in Flagstaff sounds just divine right about now... Last summer I skipped the annual reading list because I was pregnant and re-reading my all-time favorites (crazy hormones send you running for the familiar--for me that meant lots of trips to Hogwarts, Mitford, and Maycomb.) This year, for all the chaos … [Read more...]

Wherein I Decline to Support Cancer

So, after i wrote a lovely blog post about neighborhood evangelism (See post http://irreverin.wordpress.com/2011/06/17/do-i-have-something-in-my-teeth/) i went to the grocery store across the street to pick up lunch. The same store where i go for intentional people-watching, neighbor-meeting and stranger greeting. I walked in all open to the spirit--then i promplty left, annoyed at the one person who tried to speak to me. Here's why. When i walked in the door, she was set up at a folding … [Read more...]

Do I Have Something in My Teeth?

On an Alaskan cruise a couple of years ago, (let me say here, we learned that we are more free range travelers than cruise people--but that is not really pertinent to the story) i was eating lunch with an elderly couple. Jeremy was in the room struggling with a nasty bout of vertigo, and while this was not a formal "assigned seating" kind of cruise, these folks graciously asked me to join them. I don't remember where they were from, or their names, or really anything about them, other than that … [Read more...]

An Abundance of Sunshine

My husband and i were visiting Phoenix for the first time. It was exactly 5 years ago this month, and i came to town to interview with the Foothills search committee. They flew him out too, which told me a couple of things about this church, where i am still blessed to serve. 1--they were pretty interested in calling me as their pastor, based on the phone interview. 2--they were ready to start making some concrete decisions and get moving toward their future. 3--they understood that my spouse … [Read more...]

Tomato, To-mah-to…

Well, about this time every year, i commence whining. About the miserable desert heat, about the astronomical utility bill, about the utter lack of lightning bugs to bring an element of joy to sweltering summer nights... and maybe, most of all, about the fruitless (ha ha) search for a good tomato in the desert. Growing up in Kentucky, i was spoiled. Every May-August or so, I could go to the farmer's market, i could count on gifts from friends' gardens, i could even find beautiful local … [Read more...]

A Glimpse of Things to Come

AZ summer + small children means rising in the 5-5:30AM range with the sun. If you are a parent who does anything with your kid at that hour other than turn on the t.v.--then you're a liar. The other day i turned on the last few minutes of a "Full House" rerun, before "Max and Ruby." (That's right. My kid gets up so early that there aren't even cartoons on Nickelodeon yet. She's up with the insomniacs and third-shift convenience store workers who are just coming home with their breakfast of … [Read more...]

Good Judgement (not an oxymoron)

It's hard teaching a 2-year-old how to share. Can i get an amen? The mantra at our house lately has been, "don't take things away from baby brother...it makes him sad." MIGHT be starting to sink in a bit. The other day i was getting dressed for the day, and heard the unmistakable sound of a baby playing with a plastic bag. (Parents of the Year, people! Right here!)  I hurried toward the sound to intervene...and came into the room to find that the "big" kid (the 2-year-old) had already … [Read more...]

Half-Baked

I'm not much of a romantic. I don't, for instance, remember important dates like my first date with my husband. I know it was late-May-ish, and i know that it was 10 years ago. Suddenly, today, i turn the page to June, and realize that we've missed our 10-year date-iversary. I may not be a romantic. But, that kind of bums me out. (Luckily, he is not such a romantic either, so neither of us is in trouble...) Since we didn't get to go on a special date to mark the day(ish), I'll do a … [Read more...]
