Day 2.5; New Mexico

alb2

Continuing with my English Major Diet, wherein the narrative matters as much as the food...Like i was saying yesterday, hard to believe that i had 2 of the best meals ever on the same day, but travel is like that sometimes. Of course, travel food is hit or miss. It can be the best thing ever, or it can be a string of bad chains that stretches all across the country. It was day 3 of our drive/move from Kentucky to Arizona. We were getting to the good stuff--western New Mexico starts to … [Read more...]

Day 2; Burgers, Burritos and Beginnings

midpointsign

Ok, so we start. Read back a day if you want to know why i'm recounting the best meals i ever ate. Basically, I figure that reflecting on the divine dining experience will keep me from eating crap like, you know, cheeseburgers. So why am i starting my 'best meals ever' series with a cheeseburger? Stay with me.I have been a Route 66 nerd for however long...a long time. When i graduated from seminary my sweet (then new-ish) husband bought me a road trip guide and an old set of maps … [Read more...]

Be Still: Week 2, Day 4

“When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.” ― Wen … [Read more...]

Listen: Week 2, Day 2

"What a thing it is to sit absolutely alone, in the forests, at night, cherished by this wonderful, unintelligible, perfectly innocent speech, the most comforting speech in the world, the talk that rain makes by itself all over the bridges, and the talk of the water courses everywhere in the hollows! Nobody started it, nobody is going to stop it. It will talk as long as it wants, this rain. As long as it talks I am going to listen."       --Thomas MertonWhat a notion--that we might be cheri … [Read more...]

Best of Both Worlds

Around here, if you want to enjoy any outside time between june and october, it has to be early. I mean like, nonsense early.Luckily, our kids wake up nonsense early. So this morning, we threw on some shoes, grabbed the dog, and were leaving the house by 7 (true story) babies and all. I mean, I left the house without COFFEE people. Don't fear for my family though. They are all ok.We moved to a beautiful preserve area over a month ago, and had yet to go exploring, so we finally just went. … [Read more...]

Going Anyway

baby1vacaycar2

When Jeremy and i moved to arizona, we had 5 blissful weeks between the time we put ky in the rear view mirror, and my start date at foothills. We resisted all urges to come straight to phoenix, unpack, find jeremy a job, and be grown-ups. The movers took our stuff to storage (some of which we got back eventually... not recommending that moving company any time soon) and for 5 weeks we were on roam. "You're homeless!" my bff Bridget said. "We're free!" said i.We spent 3 days at a posh resort … [Read more...]

Carry-On Kids

I have seen something else under the sun:        The race is not to the swift        or the battle to the strong,        nor does food come to the wise        or wealth to the brilliant        or favor to the learned;        but time and chance happen to them all. --Ecc.9:11Call me crazy… but, I am going to Europe this summer. Why’s that crazy? you ask… Wait for it. When I go on this trip, I will be 5 months pregnant. I will also have an 18-month old in tow. Now you’ll agree that I’m out of my … [Read more...]

Sacred Space

Sacred SpaceJeremy and I are national park disciples. We visit them any chance we get, and often go out of our way to experience one. It is always worth it. Always.  As we watch Ken Burn’s new documentary, “National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” its fun to say, “hey, we’ve been there!” over and over again.Just to give you some insight as to the spiritual value of our parks system—and this film—the first episode is entitled “The Scripture of Nature.”The film is full of historical reference, f … [Read more...]
