Real Housewives and Food Challenges

There are very few things in the world that are black and white to me. Wherein I am comfortable saying "this is ALWAYS right," or "this is NEVER ok."For instance, I am a pretty steady liberal on most things, but I don't have a clear line on abortion. I take issue with both sides of the aisle on this one, and it is just a difficult, painful truth of our society. I guess you could say i'm of the "Safe, legal, and rare" school, all the while knowing that "legal" means, really, you can't control … [Read more...]

How Fancy is That?

In the spirit of summer reading book reports, I have a new favorite heroine. Fancy Nancy. No really, I mean it. That kid is awesome. I know that I frequently hate on the girly girl princess culture that sends our daughters all sorts of harmful subliminal messages about their worth in the world. However, i do not hate all things girly. A little sparkle here and there can go a long way to draw a kids' eye to something that has value at the core. [however, just don't get me started on … [Read more...]

A Little Bit Red…

"Why is it that every time we go to southern California, we are absolutely the Clampets?!"  A personal favorite Bartlett-ism from The West Wing gospel files. President Bartlett and his staff have travelled to California, where they need to really impress some people who could help them get re-elected, and calimity ensues. Ultimately, his personal aid and his White House Communications Director get into a bar fight and wind up in jail.Thinking of that moment as I wonder: Why is it that, w … [Read more...]

There is No One Like Our God

There is no "I" in Christian.Oh, wait...I've finally figured it out. Why I can't stand Christian radio. For years, it's been driving me bananas, and I don't even listen to it enough to make a fair justification of why. I keep thinking maybe I've judged the whole industry unfairly. Kind of like cauliflower. Every now and then I figure, "I'm a grown up now, I should like this..."  So I give it another bite--another 30 seconds or so of my listening time... After all, I like to know how C … [Read more...]

Muffin Moment: A Mean Mom and Minister

muffin-mess1

I gave her 3 chances. I am not a mean mom.3 chances to help me make muffins without sticking her hand in the bowl of flour and sugar. After the third, she was not allowed to help me anymore. Kicking screaming meltdown ensued. Morning—day OFF morning—disrupted. Was it worth it?Thing is, it was not about the muffin mess. I don’t mind cleaning a little flour off the counter. But after 3 times, she was testing. And the answer to that test is, if you do something mom or dad says not to do, ba … [Read more...]

Best of Both Worlds

backyard24

Around here, if you want to enjoy any outside time between june and october, it has to be early. I mean like, nonsense early.Luckily, our kids wake up nonsense early. So this morning, we threw on some shoes, grabbed the dog, and were leaving the house by 7 (true story) babies and all. I mean, I left the house without COFFEE people. Don't fear for my family though. They are all ok.We moved to a beautiful preserve area over a month ago, and had yet to go exploring, so we finally just went. … [Read more...]

The Brown Marker

brownmarker

The Brown MarkerI try to be a Spirit-led person. That is to say, I keep track of important meetings and appointments so as to respect other people’s time, but  ultimately I try to trust the need of the day to shape my day, rather than trying to shape it myself. Over-planning always malfunctions for me. In fact, the more I have planned, the less I actually do.I know this about myself. And yet, when I get stressed and overwhelmed by my schedule, my unknowns, my surroundings…you know, when l … [Read more...]

Nice Enough

Nice Enough…I moved last month.  If you haven’t seen a blog post about the spiritual exercise of moving , or the theological value of letting some things go, blah blah blah, it’s because I’ve been too overwhelmed to write anything. Moving on… we love our new house, and its wilderness views.  (I’ll post pics soon).Bad news: the neighbors. To be fair, I’ve only met two of them. One was nice enough, but did not seem at all interested knowing the people next door to her. I went out of my way to s … [Read more...]

Going Anyway

baby1vacaycar2

When Jeremy and i moved to arizona, we had 5 blissful weeks between the time we put ky in the rear view mirror, and my start date at foothills. We resisted all urges to come straight to phoenix, unpack, find jeremy a job, and be grown-ups. The movers took our stuff to storage (some of which we got back eventually... not recommending that moving company any time soon) and for 5 weeks we were on roam. "You're homeless!" my bff Bridget said. "We're free!" said i.We spent 3 days at a posh resort … [Read more...]
