Bless This Mess (without the stress)

Listen to me, young folks in your 20's, figuring out what you're going to be--I want to tell you something. You can, in fact, have it all. You can have a meaningful, fulfilling career, AND a healthy, happy family. Those who say you cannot are haters, so don't listen to them. You can do both and live. It is possible. What you will probably not have--nay, what you will never have, in that particular life combination--is a clean house. Just live with it. You will be happier, and so will your … [Read more...]

Unknown

It was a rare (RARE) Saturday afternoon moment. Both kids were asleep at the same time, and my spouse was out of the house. I had just settled into the good chair with a library book, and the phone rang. I glanced over and there it was...the "unknown caller."What do you do? I almost never answer. Especially not on a Saturday, when there are sleeping babies and good books to be read.  It was almost a no-brainer.And yet, this time, I answered. For whatever reason. And it was my brother, ca … [Read more...]

And Paul Thought Corinth Was Bad…

Naked is all the rage.Naked Juice: great lunch in a quick and easy container. Crazy expensive, but unless they're lying on the label, it's actually good for you.Naked Pizza=new franchise in my neighborhood. Perhaps unfortunately named, because my first thought is, plain crust. No sauce, no cheese, no toppings. What's the point? In fact, it is hippie organic whole food ingredients, blah blah blah. Again, unless the material lies, it is actually good for you.Naked and Famous … [Read more...]

Where You From?

Do you know Wendell Berry? I don’t mean have you ever had him over for supper, I mean, when I  say his name, do you perk up and expect to hear something good and important? If not, go here before you read on. I mean, he’s kind of a big deal.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendell_BerryI grew up in Kentucky. I’m from Laurel County, home of the original Kentucky Fried Chicken. (Yes, really… that thing up around Louisville is a tourist trap). London, my hometown, is also home of the World Chick … [Read more...]

Going Anyway

When Jeremy and i moved to arizona, we had 5 blissful weeks between the time we put ky in the rear view mirror, and my start date at foothills. We resisted all urges to come straight to phoenix, unpack, find jeremy a job, and be grown-ups. The movers took our stuff to storage (some of which we got back eventually... not recommending that moving company any time soon) and for 5 weeks we were on roam. "You're homeless!" my bff Bridget said. "We're free!" said i.We spent 3 days at a posh resort … [Read more...]

An Abundance of Sunshine

My husband and i were visiting Phoenix for the first time. It was exactly 5 years ago this month, and i came to town to interview with the Foothills search committee. They flew him out too, which told me a couple of things about this church, where i am still blessed to serve. 1--they were pretty interested in calling me as their pastor, based on the phone interview. 2--they were ready to start making some concrete decisions and get moving toward their future. 3--they understood that my spouse pl … [Read more...]

Sacred Space

Sacred SpaceJeremy and I are national park disciples. We visit them any chance we get, and often go out of our way to experience one. It is always worth it. Always.  As we watch Ken Burn’s new documentary, “National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” its fun to say, “hey, we’ve been there!” over and over again.Just to give you some insight as to the spiritual value of our parks system—and this film—the first episode is entitled “The Scripture of Nature.”The film is full of historical reference, f … [Read more...]
