Dear Millennials: I Don’t Care If You Come to Church

Hey, Millennials. Listen. I no longer care if you come to church or not. I know we’ve been sweating you for a decade--ever since we realized that you really were so over the moral posturing, the monotonous praise tunes, and the coffee in unsustainable styrofoam cups. I know we've begged you to come back, tried to lure you with pizza and edgy panel discussions; we've stayed up nights wondering WHY you don't love us anymore; we've conducted expensive studies trying to win you back. But that's al … [Read more...]

Chapter and Verse: Why Faith-Based Voting is a Bad Idea

This story about Donald Trump speaking at Liberty University is so full of gross things, I don't know which gross thing to discuss first.Wait. Yes I do. Let's start with "two Corinthians."If you're reading this without context, you might be thinking... Two Corinthians what? Two Corinthians walked into a bar? Or, "Two Corinthians: The long-awaited sequel to the epic saga, Corinth One--coming soon to a theater near you!"But no. In his speech to the broadly Christian student body, Trump … [Read more...]

Liberals Love America Too

We rail against gun culture, the gross injustice of capitalism, and the disintegrating lines between church and state. Some may say, for these reasons and others, that we hate America. But I've got a secret for you: I'm going to whisper it so I don't have to turn in my lefty hippie commie card...Liberals are patriotic. For real though. In fact, most of us would argue that we hold the values above BECAUSE we love our country. We love equal opportunity, and government free from the tyranny … [Read more...]

Get it Together, America–We’ve Got Company

Maybe this week in U.S. news is no more embarrassing than any other. But I tell you what, I am feeling especially appalled by our collective bad behavior. Maybe it’s because the behavior has been especially…well, appalling. Or maybe it’s because the POPE IS IN TOWN, and, I don’t know, it seems like we should clean up the place a little. Use a napkin, at the very least, and not put our *^@%#^ feet on the table. It’s hard to know where to begin, with such ignorant, arrogant and buffoonish ac … [Read more...]

Cut and Paste

I've had a startling revelation--I'm conservative. At least, the elements of my life reflect conservative values. I am married to a partner of opposite sex. He is my first spouse, and the father of both our children. We have 2.5 kids--meaning, two kids and a really sweet dog. We have very little debt. Heck, we don't even have a car payment. We don't have cable. One parent stays home with the children full-time. We do not let our kids watch inapproprate television, nor do we expose them to music … [Read more...]

How God Gets Stuff Done

Other people have said it--have been saying all week--but it bears repeating: God does not 'intend' rape. Ever. Are we really having this conversation, America?Abortion is bad, m'k? We are all in agreement on this, whatever you may think of those who advocate for choice. I have another post with my thoughts on life , if you want to go there. But for now, let's reflect on the appalling truth that a man like Richard Mourdock (did you know who he was before yesterday? me neither) can use the … [Read more...]

A Bad Political Hair Day

My goodness. I am so grossed out, i do not know where to start.Wait, yes i do. Mr Trump--you have bad hair. It makes you look like a ridiculous charicature of yourself. But since you are a (straight white) man, nobody much cares. Well...a straight white man with big ol' piles of cash. You can say and do whatever you want. You can sleep with whomever you want. You can 'fire' whomever you want--and get paid for doing it in an entertaining fashion. You can put a resort or golf course anywhere you … [Read more...]

Primetime Throwdown (yes, Brian Williams just said ‘throwdown…’)

It was a long night.I went to sleep at a decent hour, then woke up at a distinctly INdecent hour, and lay awake until right around the time my kids started stirring. Isn't that always the way...Normally, I'd attribute my nocturnal twitchiness to some ill-advised afternoon coffee, or a pressing deadline. But no. I woke up in the middle of the night, rehashing the presidential debate; and in my sleep-deprived mind, it sounded something like this: 'did not.'  'did too.' 'nuh-uh.' 'yes-huh.' 'he … [Read more...]

The Faulty Filter

I don't understand much about phishing scams, or how the low-lives who run them turn a profit, or why the whole scene is named after a pretty great band. But I do know that my officeLive account has been vulnerable to attacks on numerous occasion, and every time it happens, i get more and more junk. I also know that i can mark something as 'junk mail,' and it still finds a way to creep into my inbox. The 'senders' always manage to find someway to disguise the source just enough so that my … [Read more...]
