Push Pause to Start

It's been 2 months. That's 8 weeks of travel with young children; of shoe melting, hair frizzing heat and humidity; of trying to cram in a visit with every person i've ever known; of meals on the road; of playing tetris with blocks of time; of waking up in the morning to briefly--briefly--wonder where i was that day; of suitcase living, and all the wardrobe crises that implies...Yes, sabbatical is supposed to be a time of rest. But when you are a parent of young children, the reality i … [Read more...]

Flex Space, Sacred Space

Chairs or pews? Ah, the age-old question that has turned many a pastor's hair gray before his/her time, and split many a faithful congregation down its carpeted center-aisle. That is, if they hadn't already split over the carpet color...The first time i walked into a sanctuary that had chairs, i thought it felt weird and wrong and unchurch-like. I was walking in as the new student minister, and luckily, nobody asked me what i thought about the seating arrangement. Since then, I've served … [Read more...]

The Story You Thought You Knew

richard-scarry

I used to love those Richard Scarry books when i was a kid. You know the ones: with lots of colorful, happy-looking animals, dressed like people, going about everyday sorts of activities. Some little vignettes thrown in here and there, but mostly, just some commentary on what the animals are doing, what kinds of stuff they have, and questions about what we might do in our day, and what kinds of stuff we might have, too... It sounds super dull, but when you are a kid who is learning to talk, and … [Read more...]

Confession: Progressive Christians Love the Bible, Too

cool-door

It occurs to me that I should never be famous. Not that i was ever in much danger of that...i'm just thinking that i should avoid it at all costs now, because I am still experiencing 'feedback fatigue' from the discussion about amendment 1 the other day. I usually get a handful of readers, mostly church folks and my mom (who told me that i should sometimes count her twice, because she comes back to read it again). To give you a little perspective on the kind of traffic I got this week--i've been … [Read more...]

It was a beautiful day in north Phoenix. In MAY. That’s saying something.  Sometimes, May can melt your socks. But this particular late morning was mid-80′s, sunny and breezy. My husband was setting up lounge chairs and misters, and I was trying to get the kids set up with snacks and toys, content, and playing together happily, so that dad and i could chill and enjoy the weather. If you’ve ever spent time with small children, you are laughing right now. I got the snack, they wanted a … [Read more...]

We Hold Some Truths to be Self-Evident…

constitution1

I went to bed angry, and woke up with a deep and painful sigh of the soul. Every other blogger in the progressive and free-thinking world is writing and ranting about North Carolina today. But really, what can you say? What can you say when a country that is based on freedom, passes a law that suppresses the very right to be one's self? What can you say when people who claim faith in a loving, merciful God, pass a law out of hate and spite, that serves no purpose but to label, ostracize … [Read more...]

A Moving Picture

95wombat

My 3-year-old has a new catch phrase response for when you ask her a question and she doesn't know the answer. Or at least, doesn't have the words handy. She says, "I don't know. I haven't seen the movie yet."Now, somewhere in her quickly-developing brain, there is a very literal connection in there, something that has to do with an actual movie. Not that she's seen many movies--she does well to sit through a 20-minute cartoon--but she thinks there is a movie that goes with everything. Every … [Read more...]

S*^! Jesus Says: The Missionary Edition

phone

"Good afternoon. My name is **Jane** and I'm with **Betterthanyou** ministries. I was wondering if you'd like to meet with one of our missionaries and learn more about how to share the gospel of Jesus with our Jewish brothers and sisters?"Oh, girlfriend. You are barking up the wrong cactus... And THIS is why i usually don't answer the office phones in the afternoon, unless it is a name i recognize on that caller i.d.You know how you think of the right thing to say, about 4 seconds after … [Read more...]

Unwound

First, confessions of an English major: I was totally thrown off my zen today by my yoga instructor's improper use of the word "invaluable." I could not release the error to its own beautiful truth or whatever, and focus in the present moment. That out of the way--best class ever today. We focused on twists. I'm sure there are fancy yogi terms for twist variations, but to me, all that was lost after invaluable. As far am I'm concerned, we just spent an hour twisting, and it was divine. I have t … [Read more...]
