Saturday Night’s Alright (just alright)

One thing they don't tell you when you go into the ministry [wait--there are about a THOUSAND things that "they" don't tell you, but this is one] is that you should say good bye to Saturdays. They no longer exist. Well, at least not for you. This is why many clergy take Fridays off--to have the whole day free, knowing the next morning does not press too closely in on your sabbath day. But even then, busy churches have life on Saturdays, at least on occasion.I am a Monday-off person myself. … [Read more...]

Too Marvelous For Me

On occasion, it becomes necessary to bring one's children to one's office.I may not be the most organized person in the world. I may not be a compulsive cleaner. But the calamity that ensues any time i bring my kids to work for a few minutes...let's just say, it makes the rest of my life look orderly to a fault. For every 15 minutes that I spend making a few quick phone calls, gathering some reading to do at home, or answering emails--it takes an hour to clean up the next day. Sometimes, I … [Read more...]

The Brown Marker

The Brown MarkerI try to be a Spirit-led person. That is to say, I keep track of important meetings and appointments so as to respect other people’s time, but  ultimately I try to trust the need of the day to shape my day, rather than trying to shape it myself. Over-planning always malfunctions for me. In fact, the more I have planned, the less I actually do.I know this about myself. And yet, when I get stressed and overwhelmed by my schedule, my unknowns, my surroundings…you know, when l … [Read more...]

Going Anyway

When Jeremy and i moved to arizona, we had 5 blissful weeks between the time we put ky in the rear view mirror, and my start date at foothills. We resisted all urges to come straight to phoenix, unpack, find jeremy a job, and be grown-ups. The movers took our stuff to storage (some of which we got back eventually... not recommending that moving company any time soon) and for 5 weeks we were on roam. "You're homeless!" my bff Bridget said. "We're free!" said i.We spent 3 days at a posh resort … [Read more...]

Do I Have Something in My Teeth?

On an Alaskan cruise a couple of years ago, (let me say here, we learned that we are more free range travelers than cruise people--but that is not really pertinent to the story) i was eating lunch with an elderly couple. Jeremy was in the room struggling with a nasty bout of vertigo, and while this was not a formal "assigned seating" kind of cruise, these folks graciously asked me to join them. I don't remember where they were from, or their names, or really anything about them, other than that … [Read more...]

Elsewhere

The last time i preached a sermon on the 23rd Psalm, it was rotten. To those who heard it, it was probably just bland and forgettable, but to me, upon reflection, it went nowhere, and offered little good news. It was years ago and i don't even remember what it said, so why am i sure that it was a crummy sermon?Because even now, when i reflect on peace, it is a broad and sweeping ideal that covers everything from lying on a beach with an umbrella drink (yes, please) to ending the conflict in … [Read more...]
