Soul Seasons

A pumpkin latte in my hand. From Not Starbuck's. A cool crisp 62 degrees out. I am on a porch swing with a background of lush foliage, bleeding slowly from green into reds and browns and yellows. I am wearing my favorite brown sweatshirt, and reading a really great library book. The day ahead is miraculously full of nothing but open time, save playing with my kids, and later having some friends over for dinner. OK, so almost none of those things is true. I do, in fact, have a pumpkin(ish) … [Read more...]

For Such a Time as This

peace-pole (1)

I was sitting on the floor of my crummy first-year-of-being-a-grownup apartment, doing grad school homework that i should have done the night before, and getting ready to go to class. Which means I probably shouldn't have been watching tv, but was. When the plane hit the first tower, i went and woke up my roommate, who was still sleeping. "What? That's crazy!" she said. I ran quickly back to the tv to find out what a breathless world was waiting to find out--what sort of mechanical error, … [Read more...]

A Cup of the Good Stuff

india

When's the last time you got out the good china? After I went on and on yesterday about the blessedness of a messy house, I think I should clarify--though I blamed the chaos on the kiddos, I have to own that much (much) of the mess is mine. And not quite so much of it is my husband's. He does his best to keep some order, but he is only one person. Much like my mother (and oh, they do talk about me) he finally stops cleaning up after me so that I will one day go oh, my, this place is a … [Read more...]

Unknown

unknown1

It was a rare (RARE) Saturday afternoon moment. Both kids were asleep at the same time, and my spouse was out of the house. I had just settled into the good chair with a library book, and the phone rang. I glanced over and there it was...the "unknown caller." What do you do? I almost never answer. Especially not on a Saturday, when there are sleeping babies and good books to be read.  It was almost a no-brainer. And yet, this time, I answered. For whatever reason. And it was my brother, … [Read more...]

Saturday Night’s Alright (just alright)

One thing they don't tell you when you go into the ministry [wait--there are about a THOUSAND things that "they" don't tell you, but this is one] is that you should say good bye to Saturdays. They no longer exist. Well, at least not for you. This is why many clergy take Fridays off--to have the whole day free, knowing the next morning does not press too closely in on your sabbath day. But even then, busy churches have life on Saturdays, at least on occasion. I am a Monday-off person myself. … [Read more...]

And Paul Thought Corinth Was Bad…

naked2

Naked is all the rage. Naked Juice: great lunch in a quick and easy container. Crazy expensive, but unless they're lying on the label, it's actually good for you. Naked Pizza=new franchise in my neighborhood. Perhaps unfortunately named, because my first thought is, plain crust. No sauce, no cheese, no toppings. What's the point? In fact, it is hippie organic whole food ingredients, blah blah blah. Again, unless the material lies, it is actually good for you. Naked and Famous … [Read more...]

Birth Order Bingo

whatever-its-cool

We've all heard the rumor that first children are more successful. Well, it's not a rumor. More recently, I heard it supported by scientific evidence. First-borns get more alone time with their parents, an uninterrupted infancy, mom's more likely to breastfeed before there are multiple kids to juggle, dad's got more time to listen to Focus on the Family (ok, i made that one up because i always get lots of hits when i tag j.d...) In any case, you've probably heard all this. It's not a new … [Read more...]

The Greatest Sweepstakes EVER

My aunt has won vehicles in sweepstakes contests. Not once. Not twice. But THREE TIMES. Impossibly good luck? Maybe that too. But mostly, it's because of the sheer volume of entries. Filling out those forms is how she unwinds. She doesn't knit or watch junk tv or go on frivilous shopping errands. She does plenty of worthwhile things in her very full and busy life, like granparenting and teaching nursing students and being a full-time minister's wife, just to name a few. But when she has … [Read more...]

Too Marvelous For Me

On occasion, it becomes necessary to bring one's children to one's office. I may not be the most organized person in the world. I may not be a compulsive cleaner. But the calamity that ensues any time i bring my kids to work for a few minutes...let's just say, it makes the rest of my life look orderly to a fault. For every 15 minutes that I spend making a few quick phone calls, gathering some reading to do at home, or answering emails--it takes an hour to clean up the next day. Sometimes, I … [Read more...]

Real Housewives and Food Challenges

man-vs-food

There are very few things in the world that are black and white to me. Wherein I am comfortable saying "this is ALWAYS right," or "this is NEVER ok." For instance, I am a pretty steady liberal on most things, but I don't have a clear line on abortion. I take issue with both sides of the aisle on this one, and it is just a difficult, painful truth of our society. I guess you could say i'm of the "Safe, legal, and rare" school, all the while knowing that "legal" means, really, you can't control … [Read more...]
