This is the line in the sand that delineates the ordinary from the extraordinary, the mundane from the mysterious; and the awake from the asleep.
Often one finds that they can’t just skip across the threshold…because they bump right into the “Guardian” that stands between worlds. This being usually poses a difficult question or riddle to the wannabe dream hero. This is a test to see if they are worthy of passing through. By the time the hero crosses this threshold, they must do so with their whole heart, soul, and body. By struggling to pass this threshold, the wannabe hero demonstrates their commitment to becoming an actual hero, a master of the mystery of dreams.
On the level of sleep, many people have a difficult time shutting their minds off and crossing the threshold to The Land of Nod. Finding an easeful—and drug-free way—to enter sleep can be quite the riddle to solve. To outsmart the Threshold Guardian, I recommend a few drops of lavender essential oil on your pillow, 33mugwort balm on your temples, and doing the work (as mentioned in stage one) to de-clutter your dream zone.
The “riddle,” as it relates to dreamwork, can often be the dream itself. Dreams are the language of the soul, and the soul speaks in pictures that, to the conscious mind, can seem absurd. One must rise to a higher level to behold the “method in the madness” and receive the true elixir of the dream.
What kind of ceremony can you create for yourself to mark this transition (buy a new journal, set your alarm to get up a half-hour earlier to record your dreams, create a contract for yourself that you sign and date, etc…)?
In this episode of weekly radio show, The D-Spot (Mondays at 11am PST on www.AwakeningZone.com), I discuss Stage 5 of the Hero’s Dream Journey (Crossing the Threshold) in more depth:
