Our Favorite Things to Do & Eat On Maui June 30, 2015

Untitled 2

Hi guys!

Over the past six months a lot of you guys have hit me and Alyssa up asking about Maui. Either you’re coming on a trip, you’re here now, or thinking about planning a trip. Either way I figured instead of always typing the same thing to you folks I’d make a longer blog that gives you all our favorites! So if someone asks me in the future about what to eat, where to go, what church we are at, etc I’ll probably just tweet them this link! ha

PLACES TO EAT

Food is my love language, and maui has some incredible spots. Below are our favorites! Location is in parenthesis.

  1. Monkeypod (Wailea) – we love this place! It’s kind of like a hip brewery with surf/hawaii vibes. If you’re a hipster you’ll like this place. They have great happy hour where the pizzas are half off (so 7-8 bucks!). Great dinner date spot (average meal is prob 15-20).
  2. Da Kitchen (Kihei & Kahului) – if you want to eat local then definitely go here. Their plate lunches are to die for, and a local staple. It’s basically two scoops of rice, mac salad, and you pick the meat. I usually get the Katsu & Teriyaki Chicken combo. The Kahului one is sit down, and the Kihei one is too but you are served in styrofoam and stuff so it’s more of a faster express version.
  3. Leoda’s (Olowalu) – This is one of my favorite places and probably the most famous on the island. It’s a sandwich and pie shop. It’s seriously unreal. Definitely try the pies if you go. It’s all by itself on the road to Lahaina so we stop there when we head to the west side of the island.
  4. Ululani’s (Kihei) – This is a shave ice place. It’s easily the best on the island. They make their syrups in house, the shave ice is the most finely shaved possible, and it’s just incredible. Go here.
  5. Honorable mentions (some we’ve just heard are good, but still haven’t tried) – Star Noodle, Five Palms for breakfast, Kihei Cafe.

THINGS TO DO

There’s an insane amount of stuff to do on Maui, so I just named our top few below.

  1. Ho’okipa at sunset – ok this is awesome and not as well known. If you go to Ho’okipa about an hour before sunset, every single night there are about 15-30 huge sea turtles that sleep on the beach. It’s unbelievable and like clockwork every night they are there. The beach is huge though and they always sleep on the eastern most part of the beach so walk to the very end of the beach and you’ll see them. Here’s a pic of where and what it should look like. And no those aren’t rocks those are turtles!
  2. Cliff House – This is my favorite chill spot on the island. It’s one of the most pristine and beautiful snorkel spots, hang spots, and cliff jumping spots on the island. It’s got a nice swimming area and beautiful snorkeling and the cliffs are really wide so tons of room to just hangout and bring lunch and swim. Also it has about 2-3 great cliffs to jump off that aren’t sketchy at all (meaning really deep water, no rocks sticking out, etc). I mostly see locals there and it’s usually not that crowded so it’s great. The problem is it’s kind of hard to get to. If you google “Kapalua Cliff House” thats the actual spot but it takes about a 10-15 min walk to get around to the actual access of it. Ask a local or someone there and they should know. You just walk past the montage and then get to the trail and stay left until you get there.
  3. Road to Hana – The road to Hana is amazing! But you have to know where to stop along the way or else it’s just a pretty drive. Just google the different stops and their mile markers. My favorite are the black sand beach, Venus Pools, and few others. Bamboo Forest is amazing also I’ve heard.
  4. Beaches – This depends on what side of the island you are on but I really love Kapalua Bay on west side, and big beach or white rock on south side.
  5. La Perouse – if you want to see stars better than you’ve probably ever been before drive out to La Perouse Bay at night and just park your car and some beach chairs and stay for a bit. It feels like you’re basically driving off the island because it’s at the very most southern tip but its so pristine and amazing and dark so the stars are insane. On a clear night you can see the Milky Way and the waves are crashing right in front of you.

Man, this was tough to narrow both food and hangouts down to just a couple since Maui has an incredible amount of both. Hope this helps though if you journey over to Maui. Such a fun place. Also can tweet me or message me if you come and have different question!
