“Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust.” Ash Wednesday is a time for remembering our own mortality. Perhaps, that is all we have to cling to. We know death cometh. Is there anything after? There is no way to know for sure. The only thing we know is death. When you look survey your surroundings, death cometh. When you look into your own person, death cometh. Our planet is dying. There is no salvation. Our families are dying. There is no salvation. Our friends are dying. There is no salvation. Ideas of God are dying. There is no salvation. Instead of talking about belief, maybe we should concentrate on what is certain…death cometh. Instead of faith in God, maybe we should place our faith in death. There is so much more evidence for the end of mortality than there is for the existence of a benevolent divinity. If God is there, why is he killing us? The only thing I know about God for sure…is that death cometh. In the midst of it all, may we find something that will carry us through.

Amen.
