Communion is one of the most consistent and sacred practices in the Christian world. Instituted by Jesus, the practice is intended to draw people closer to Jesus and each other. Recently, I’ve been considering what the fullness or complete embodiment of communion is. We have to assume that since Jesus is both the totality of the body and blood that Jesus is the fullness of communion. With this in mind, we do know that Jesus took communion with his disciples. Does this mean that Jesus is still taking communion? Does Jesus take communion with us? I don’t think so. I think that Jesus was simply illustrating the way. Furthermore, when we take communion we are moving closer and closer to oneness with Jesus. Since Jesus doesn’t take communion, then we should take communion less and less the more and more we become like Jesus. Perhaps, communion is a sign of spiritual poverty and not spiritual health. Maybe communion is evil because it pulls us away from experiencing perfection in Christ. Regardless, we should always be striving to become the communion that people need not worrying about gobbling up communion for ourselves. The incarnation of the body and blood is not a singular event. We are the communion that people need most.

Amen.
