Whole Woman Series: Azalea McKinney & The Perfect Launch

Whole Woman Series: Azalea McKinney & The Perfect Launch February 24, 2017

I remember the day like it was yesterday, and the sinking feeling in my stomach as the realization dawned: in order to be happy, I could never have a boss. I had to be an entrepreneur.

I had just done a values assessment, and realized that my number one value is freedom. I want the freedom to be who I am supposed to be, to say what’s on my mind, to use my time as I see fit. The only way I can do that and make money was to have my own business, with a brand that aligned with my values, and clients I could fire if necessary.

My stomach dropped because I already knew how hard entrepreneurship is. And it’s hard.  But for some of us, if we’re going to do the thing God has called us to do, and be the person God has called us to be, it requires the freedom to do just that. That’s a scary prospect — at least for me. It required a whole lot of faith, because for me, it meant giving up a nice, steady paycheck to depend on clients, who sometimes come, and sometimes go (by the nature of my business). It requires effort and belief in self and investments of time and energy. Sometimes, even just letting people know you’re in business is scary because you wonder — what are they going to think?

Of course, it’s also wholly rewarding. Not having to ask permission to take a day off to be with my kids is priceless, for example. Being able to say whatever I want to say — burning issues in my heart and mind — on this blog and on social media is also important. Having faith that my tribe would find me — that was a little scary. There are a lot of parts to launching a business.
