Birds and Roger Tory Peterson

On the day we were taken to Roger Tory Peterson’s study center in Jamestown NY we returned to the Nelson’s and took a walk. Immediately I saw my first wild turkey, and will promptly enter it into my life list of birds seen (in my Peterson’s Guide to Birds East of the Rockies).

I’ve been reading your blog with great interest almost since the first posting. You post about gospels that stop short of shalom is one that I especially resonated with. It is great to have a voice of your theological acumen and claiber in the blogosphere. And now to find out that you are a birder on top of that…. Rock on brother McKnight!Peace

And for a few minutes we were dazzled by a red-bellied sapsucker and a white-breasted nuthatch. Dashing birds.

Did we ever tell you about Mary and the turkey? She saw some cute little birds behind our house in FL that she bent down in order to see better. All of a sudden a much larger bird exploded out of the grass in front of her, and we saw her running for dear life out of the woods towards the house. The cute birds she saw were baby turkeys; the “terrible bird” was their mother; and she chased Mary out of the woods well into our yard to be sure her chicks were safe.
