Christmas Morn

On the eve of our Christmas celebration, Jesus’ birthday, we light all of the candles of the Advent wreath.

First we light the candle for HOPE because Jesus is our hope.

Second, we light the candle for PEACE because Jesus is our hope and peace.

Third, we light the candle for JOY because Jesus brings joy.

Fourth, we light the candle for LOVE because Jesus is love.

Finally we light the center candle. This is the CHRIST candle. Jesus is born. Jesus has come. Jesus is our salvation.

Let us pray:
Great God of love and light, we thank you now for the light of that special star over two thousand years ago that guided humble shepherds and learned wise men to the holy babe. Lead us now, by the light of your love, that we also may follow you to new life in him. In celebration of the birthday of our King and our Savior, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

    Amen, my brother.

We said something very similar in our worship services, specifically the meaning of the four candles. Can anyone tell me what the history of these four candles meanings are, that is hope, peace, joy, and love?

In our tradition on the other side of the Pond from you we have other traditions (with variations) relating to the candles that lock them into the story rather than virtues that emerge from the story:
The Promise of God to send the Messiah
The Prophets who foretold his Coming
John the Baptist who prepared the way
Mary, who carried him and gave birth to him
    Christ

My personal preference is for the liturgical practice that tells and illuminates the Story (although I’d prefer to have yours than none!). Wondering if the interpretation you give the candles, disconnected from the story, might encourage a spirituality that is also disconnected from it?
