Things You Need To Know About Same-Sex Marriage

Things You Need To Know About Same-Sex Marriage April 28, 2015

I was just at the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). My apartment is six blocks from SCOTUS, and I pass by it every day on my walk to work. This morning, a few hundred people were gathered outside SCOTUS and emotions were high. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments for the Obergefell v. Hodges case, which will determine whether same-sex couples have the constitutional right to marry across the nation. Here are a few things you should know about the Obergefell case and same-sex marriage in general.

What’s the Background on the Obergefell Case?

Jim Obergefell was legally married to John Arthur in Maryland. Mr. Arthur passed away in 2013, and Obergefell (residing in Ohio) wanted to be recognized as John Arthur’s husband on the death certificate, which could mean that he would receive partner benefits.

What Questions Are Being Considered?

According to scotusblog, the following two questions are being considered:

1) Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex?

2) Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state?

States Rights vs. Federal Rights

The power to decide whether same-sex marriage will be recognized currently lies with the states. 36 states and D.C. currently allow for same-sex couples to marry. :The potential is that SCOTUS could require all states to recognize gay-marriage. However, there is no inherent constitutional right to gay marriage.

Real Christians Don’t Hate Gays

Contrary to the extreme minority of “so-called Christians” that proclaim that God hates fags, Christians in fact, don’t hate gays. We believe that same-sex marriage is morally wrong because God defined marriage between one man and one woman and it is wrong for us to redefine it to go beyond that definition. However, we understand that all people are innately sinful and Christ offers redemption and forgiveness to anyone who chooses to place their faith in Him.

We believe that all people’s sexuality is broken as a result of the fall, and we need Christ to redeem us – whether gay or straight! The fact is, marriage by definition is between a man and a woman. That’s how the Bible defined it, and how history, both ancient and modern, up until a few decades ago has defined it.

As a Christian, I am committed to to honoring God’s truth above all else, and accurately displaying Christ’s love to the world. Jesus despises all sin – and I am the chief of sinners. I have been redeemed from my sin by the blood of Christ, and God has adopted me as His child.

I love all people, and want the very best for everyone. First and foremost, my desire is that everyone enters into a personal relationship with Christ. Our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Him.
