‘Beyond A.D.’: Michelle Williams Debates Dating an Apostle May 24, 2015

It probably happened. Human nature being what it is, somewhere along the way in the early days of Christianity, a woman had a crush on an Apostle — maybe more than one woman; maybe more than one Apostle.

The identity of this woman or women is lost to history, along with how the Apostle in question handled the situation (one hopes, with great virtue and delicacy), but former Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams has given the matter some thought.

Talking before her appearance on the current episode of “Beyond A.D.” — the Web companion series to NBC’s Sunday-night drama “A.D.: The Bible Continues” — posted this morning at NBC.com, Williams muses on the question (which she also addresses in the episode).

“It’s so funny,” she said, “I’m going to say this tonight … man, this is going to sound silly, but as far as being single in that time, which Apostle would I have wanted to date?

“Like Peter, I liked how he was able to get in Saul’s face. He wasn’t afraid of Saul. I want a man who’s not scared. Ooh, honey, I’m not sure. It’s so fun, thinking of these things in 2015. They were ordinary guys who trusted Jesus and Peter, who dropped everything to follow Him. He was blessed for that.

“Man, imagine them getting back together — what’s been going on with you, John?”

Watching “A.D.” — based on the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles and other documents from the early Church — has led Williams, a Christian entertainer, to do some research.

“It’s made me Google,” she said, “and go to Wikipedia. I want to go to Bible school. It really is an adventure story. In some instances, I have to watch episodes more than once because I missed something.

“I’m like, ‘Who is this character, what did he do?’ We hear about the 12 disciples, but as far as me knowing exactly which disciple, who they were, what their faults, what their strengths, what their weaknesses, were … it makes me want to discover who these great people of the Bible are.

“I like how they’re on the ladies in there. Mary Magdalene was around more than we ever knew she was.”

She’s also been hit at an emotional level.

“I’ve been watching ‘A.D.’ from the first episode,” she said. “It had me in tears. It had me crying, because you see the Crucifixion in a few ways, but there’s something different about this one. I was like, ‘OK, I’ve got to repent all over again. And it just made me want to sin again … impossible.”

Episode eight airs tonight (Sunday, May 24); here’s a recap of episode 7:
