Seahawk QB Russell Wilson Talks God, All the Media Hears Is ‘No Sex’ July 7, 2015

Although he’s only 26, Russell Wilson has already been offered and rejected $1M to play baseball (twice), been to two Super Bowls with the Seattle Seahawks, won the first one (in only his second year in the NFL), been married (to his high school sweetheart) and divorced — and given his life to Jesus at the age of 14.

Obviously, considering the divorce and the Super Bowl loss, becoming a disciple of Christ didn’t solve all Wilson’s problems, but it has inspired him to speak boldly about his faith.

In a wide-ranging July 5 conversation with Pastor Miles McPherson — also a former NFL player — of The Rock Church in San Diego, California, Wilson discusses his childhood as a “troublemaker,” the Holy Spirit moment that led him to Christ, his football and baseball dreams, and losing his father to complications of diabetes.

He also talks about the most recent NFL season, in which he got two messages from God.

In the first, which happened before the Seahawks faced the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game this past January, Wilson felt that Christ was watching how he’d react to the outcome of the game. The team pulled off an amazing win, and the usually unemotional Wilson broke down in tears while talking to sportscaster Erin Andrews, saying, “God is so good all the time, man, every time.”

The next message came right before the Super Bowl on Feb. 1, where the Seahawks faced the mighty New England Patriots. As the end of the game neared, the Hawks looked poised to pull off a win. Just shy of the end zone, rather than handing off to powerful running back Marshawn Lymch, Wilson threw a pass, which was intercepted by Patriot player Malcolm Butler (who has a great story as well). That mistake cost Seattle the Lombardi Trophy

But for Wilson, God had delivered the same message as the first time, so the young QB reacted to the loss with grace and humility, tweeting from @DangeRussWilson:

Thank You God for the opportunity. We’ll be back… I will never waiver on who He has called me to be.

All this and more is in the interview, including some Scripture analysis and readings, but all the media cares about is the bit involving Wilson and his current girlfriend, singer Ciara.

She also has a past, having dated rappers Bow Wow and 50 Cent, NBA player Amar’e Stoudemire, and rapper Future, who fathered her son, Future Zahir Wilburn, born May 19, 2014. Ciara and Future were engaged at the time, but it was called off in August 2014.

Wilson described her as a “believer” and a Christ “follower” and said:

She’s the most beautiful woman in the world; she’s the most kind person, the most engaging person.

While neither of them came into the relationship from a place of chastity, Wilson felt called to change that.

She was sitting there, and God spoke to me. He said, “I need you to leave her.” I was like, “Really? Now?” And He said, “No, I need you to leave her.” So, I told her, right then and there, “What if we took all that extra stuff off the table, just did it Jesus’ way?”

Chided by the pastor to be specific, Wilson said:

We’re talking about sex. I knew that God had brought me into her life for me to bless her, and for her to bless me, and to bless so many people with the impact that she has and that I have. It’s not perfect by any means. Life’s not perfect; I’m not perfect. But He’s anointed both of us, and He’s calling for us to do something miraculous and special.

I told her, I said to her, and she completely agreed, is the fact that we love each other without that. If you can love somebody without that, then you really love somebody.”

But, considering Ciara’s beauty, Wilson said to the crowd,

‘Y’all need to pray for me! … If there’s a 10, she’s a 15. I need y’all to pray for me.”

This news is apparently shocking, causing such headlines as:

“Russell Wilson says he and Ciara are practicing abstinence” (Washington Post)

“Just Like You, Russell Wilson Is Not Having Sex” (Deadspin)

Russell Wilson Is a Better Person Than You Because He’s Not Having Sex With Ciara” (EOnline)

UPDATE: And here are a couple more gems:

“Russell Wilson and Ciara Aren’t Having Sex: See the Dumbest Reactions” (including a radio guy in Chicago who assumes all this means Wilson is gay) (Rolling Stone)

“Russell Wilson and Ciara’s ‘No Sex’ Vow: Fetishizing Abstinence in Pop Culture” (The Daily Beast)

Well, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. Perhaps, though, the example of a young, very rich (and likely to get even richer), handsome pro athlete trying to do the right thing will inspire some people. As McPherson says in the video, we should be honoring God in everything we do … and don’t do.

Also makes me wonder why one man not having sex with his girlfriend bothers these folks so much. Does it stop them from doing anything? Or … does it make them think about what they are doing, and they don’t like it? I have no idea.

Here’s the full video, which is well worth watching:
