No Abortion ‘Scandal,’ Just a Baby Boy Left in a Nativity Scene

While TV writer/producer Shonda Rhimes is called “brave” for having her wealthy, privileged lead character in the ABC drama “Scandal” have an abortion, to the tune of “Silent Night,” one anonymous woman showed more courage than the fictional Olivia Pope could even imagine.

I don’t know who she is, but she endured a pregnancy, which was no doubt difficult and scary, and then gave birth under unfortunate circumstances.

We know this, because the child — a baby boy, with the umbilical cord still attached — was left within an indoor Nativity scene at the Holy Child Jesus Catholic Church in Richmond Hills, Queens, N.Y. A custodian found the baby around lunchtime on Monday, Nov. 23.

From WABC/Channel 7:

He heard crying and followed the noises to the nativity scene, which was being set up for the holiday season.

The newborn was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he is doing fine. He is said to be just over 5 pounds and 17 inches long.

By law, a church is considered a safe haven for drop-offs, but you are supposed to hand the baby off to a responsible person and not leave the child unattended.

Thank you, whomever you are, for bringing this child into the world and then not leaving him in a dumpster or a toilet or some of the other awful places babies are abandoned.

Obviously, a hospital or a police station would have been better, but being put in the care of Mary and Joseph will do in a pinch. OK, maybe they weren’t in the Nativity display quite yet, but you know they were keeping watch nearby.

Now to reclaim “Silent Night” from those who would profane its beauty, with a little help from a cappella group Pentatonix:
