John Elefante’s “This Time”: Exposing Abortion, Pulling At My Heartstrings

John Elefante’s “This Time”: Exposing Abortion, Pulling At My Heartstrings January 21, 2015

Day Four of our musical celebration of life, and here’s my favorite song so far:  John Elefante’s “This Time.”

Elefante - This TimeElefante is best known as the former “Kansas” lead singer.  He’s also an adoptive father.

In 2013, Elefante released a single accompanied by a music video titled “This Time” that tells the story of his adopted daughter, who was nearly aborted by her birth mother.  The video shows a pregnant teenager entering an abortion clinic and then having a dream about a little girl she knew to be her unborn daughter.

Elefante - This Time 2In the video, the 13-year-old girl escapes from the clinic and is met by her mother, who embraces her.  In real life, the story had a happy ending:  The girl placed her daughter for adoption, and Elefante and his wife were given the privilege of raising this child.  Elefante said of the video,

“I can’t imagine life without my daughter, Sami, and it just breaks my heart that pregnant young women much like her birth mother, instead of choosing life for their babies, are denying them the chance to be born. … If our song can in any way bring attention to this issue and encourage those who are considering abortion to choose life through options such as adoption, then we couldn’t be happier.”
