Lighting a Candle: 66th Annual Christopher Awards Showcase Great Movies, Books May 22, 2015

Christopher AwardsFor 66 years, the Christopher Awards have honored those in media whose work has “affirmed the highest values of the human spirit.”

The works–feature films, TV and cable shows, books for adults and for young readers–are drawn from both the sacred and the secular. They tell both true stories and fiction. The common thread which unites the winners of the prestigious award is that they are inspiring stories of people who rise above their own wants and needs to act selflessly, regardless of the sacrifice involved.

The twenty awards for 2015 were presented in New York City on May 15; on Tuesday, May 26, listeners to Sirius XM will be able to hear a special two-hour broadcast of the award presentation. The program, which will air on Sirius XM’s The Catholic Channel at 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Eastern, will feature original interviews with award winners, as well as my fellow blogger here at Patheos’ Catholic Portal, Christophers’ director of communications Tony Rossi.

This year’s book winners include some titles I know well:  Fr. James Martin’s Jesus: A Pilgrimage, and a book I reviewed for the Patheos Book Club, Mercy in the City by Kerry Weber. Feature film winners include The American Nurse and Selma. There’s another film which I enjoyed at the theater: St. Vincent, starring the deadpan Bill Murray as a crotchety old man who smokes, drinks, curses, and cavorts with a prostitute, but who has a heart of gold.

There are many other winners in the various categories. Tony Rossi describes them here in his blog, Christopher Closeup.
