No surprise here:  The BBC has chosen the noon hour on Christianity’s most reverent of days, Good Friday, to air a documentary suggesting that Jesus had a sexual relationship with Mary Magdalene.In the program, author and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg relies on accounts from the Gnostic Gospel of Mary, in which Jesus kisses his friend and disciple Mary Magdalene on the mouth and may, in fact, have taken her as his wife.   Bragg, who calls himself a Christian, believes that Jesus’ intimate relati … [Read more...]

Jane Schaberg, Feminist Theologian, Has Died


Jane Schaberg died last night at her home, in the company of friends.Schaberg, a feminist biblical scholar, was perhaps best known for her controversial book The Illegitimacy of Jesus: A Feminist Theological Interpretation of the Infancy Narratives, in which she contends that Jesus was not conceived by a virgin, but was the product of a rape by a Roman centurion.  More recently, she has focused her attention on the gnostic Gospel of Mary (about Mary Magdalene), lecturing and publishing books … [Read more...]
