What Is the NBA’s Lance Stephenson Going to Do Tonight?

The Miami Heat and the Indiana Pacers play their sixth series game in Miami tonight for the Eastern Conference Championship in the NBA. Miami is ahead 3 to 2 in the series. They can close it out tonight. But they could have closed it out Wednesday night after having Indiana down 10+ points much of the game until late in the fourth quarter. Indiana won 93 to 90. That's despite the fact that Miami's four-time MVP superstar LeBron James, without question the greatest player in the … [Read more...]

Did the Jews Accuse Jesus of Claiming to Be “God” or “a God”?

The Gospel of John relates one incident in which the Jews accused Jesus of “making himself equal to God” and another incident in which they said to him, “you, though only a human being, are making yourself God” (Jn 5.18; 10.33). (All scripture quotations are from the NRSV.) Since Christians have been taught that Jesus is God, they have been taught that these Jews were correct in making these accusations. But in each instance, Jesus’ immediate response represents a denial of those allegations (Jn … [Read more...]

Did Jesus Ask God to Forgive Those Who Killed Him?

When Jesus hung on the cross he said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23.34 NRSV). Nearly all Christians have believed that Jesus herein was asking God to forgive everyone involved in his condemnation and execution, thus regardless of any admission of guilt, and some would add Judas in his betrayal of Jesus.According to the four New Testament gospels, these words of Jesus are the first of seven brief sayings he made while hanging on the cross. This par … [Read more...]

Do You Know the Doctrine of the Trinity Was Not Established at Nicaea, in 325 A.D.?

It is widely believed, even among Christians and some of their scholars, that the Catholic Church established its official doctrine of the Trinity at its Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. But this is incorrect. The traditional doctrine of the Trinity as stated in English—that God is one essence existing as three co-equal and co-eternal Persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit—was unknown then and for decades later. Although the Nicene Council did not provide minutes of its mee … [Read more...]

Christian PGA Tour Pros Are Winning

They are Bubba Watson (second Masters win at Augusta, GA), Matt Kucher (RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, SC), and yesterday J.B. Holmes (Wells Fargo at Charlotte, NC). I can't remember if that has ever happened.I'm a fan of J.B. Holmes. I live in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the Waste Management Phoenix Open is played early every year at the TPC Stadium … [Read more...]

The U.S.-Brokered Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process Is a Disaster

I believe the Jews had a right to return to the land of Israel and settle there. It was the proper and just way to settle the so-called "Jewish Problem." What's that? The Romans threw Jews out of their land, and they dispersed throughout much of the world, called The Diaspora. There, in Gentile lands, they endured much unjust persecution and thus suffering. The worst was the Nazi Holocaust in WWII. That demonstrated that Jews should be able to return to their ancestral land. But I also … [Read more...]

Is the “Jesus’ Wife Fragment” a Forgery?

Karen L. King is a distinguished professor at Harvard Divinity School who specializes in the study of early Christianity and Gnosticism. Two of the books she has authored are entitled The Gospel of Mary Magdala. She claims Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene on the basis of a Gnostic Gospel of Mary discovered in Cairo, Egypt, in 1896. That gets Christians riled up because the New Testament gospels don't say any such thing. In September, 2012, Dr. Karen King delivered a paper at a gathering at … [Read more...]
