Spieth Wins at Colonial

Spieth Wins at Colonial May 29, 2016

Today, twenty-two year old phenom Jordan Spieth won his eighth PGA Tour tournament–the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Forth Worth, Texas. That’s where the great Ben Hogan used to hang out. Spieth’s childhood home is in nearby Dallas. He had finished second in three PGA Tour tournaments in Texas, but never won one. This victory also put him ahead of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods who won seven PGA Tour tournaments before they turned twenty-three, which was the modern record. Jordan now has until July 27th to add to his new record.

But Spieth had to put his foot to the metal in the closing holes to get this victory. And did he ever! He birdied the last three holes with long birdie attempts to win by three shots over sweet-swinging Harris English. On the 17th hole, Jordan hit a flyer from the junior rough that bounded well over the green. But in perfect Jordan Spieth style, he pitched a difficult shot that landed perfectly–just over the rough and in the fringe (we Texans call that “frog hair”)–and went right in the hole. Then he played safe on his second shot to the 18th green to avoid the water hazard left and made about a forty-foot putt.

Jordan Spieth once again proved that he is the best putter on the PGA Tour and apparently has the best short game. He had an astounding nine putts for that last nine holes. And the tournament stats said he got the ball up-and-down in the entire 72-hole tournament 18 out of 21 times when he missed greens in regulation figures. WOW! That’s golfing your ball on the short-short grass.

U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson played with Jordan in the last pairing. He tied for third for a good showing. Webb is a dedicated Christian and member of the PGA Tour Bible Study. In fact, he graduated from Baptist school Wake Forest University with a degree in religion. He may be the only guy who has ever played the PGA Tour regularly, much less a major championship winner, who got a religion degree at a reputable school.
