Be a Loser for Jesus

KeepCalmTrump thumps losers. A Twitter archivist says U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has tweeted on his Twitter account 117 times calling various people derogatorily a “loser.”

After Jesus died on the cross, Jews said he was a loser because he got killed. And to make matters worse, the state executed him by the dreadfully-tortuous and shameful method of crucifixion. Jews said their Messiah will be a big winner. They said the real Messiah will come in glory, deliver them from their enemies, and make Israel chief of the nations in a world of peace.

Jews were right–Jesus was a great big loser. And that’s why he is still going to be a great big winner and do all those things religious Jews say their Messiah will do. Just wait and see! Give it time.

Here’s what Jesus taught (in the NRSV) about being a great big loser:

  • “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matt. 10.39)
  • “For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matt. 16.25).
  • “For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8.35).
  • “For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it” (Luke 9.24).
  • “Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it” (Luke 17.35).
