Justin Thomas Sets New Record

Justin Thomas Sets New Record January 16, 2017

JustinThomasSonyOpenYesterday, Justin Thomas even bettered his blazing hot streak by setting a new, 72-hole scoring record of 253 for the PGA Tour while winning its Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was 27-under par since par at Waiale is 70. The previous 72-hole record on the PGA Tour was 254 shot by Tommy Armour III at the 2003 Texas Open. Thomas, a 23-old Kentuckian, won the SBS Tournament of Champions last week to make it two wins in a row.

Justin Thomas started the final round, yesterday, with a whopping seven shot lead. He ended the round the same, with Justin Rose in second place. Young superstar Jordan Spieth said after finishing third, “I felt like I was trying to win a tournament for second place.”

It was a wire-to-wire win for Thomas since he shot 59 his first round. There’s a lot of pressure on pro golfer in that situation. You’re leading the tournament every hole. (I only had that experience once on the PGA Tour, at Doral Country Club in Miami in 1966, until I lost the lead on the 71st hole and finished second by one shot.) Thomas said after his win, “It was really hard. I was really nervous this morning. I just had a hard time getting in a comfortable mind frame.” If he keeps playing like this, it’s going to get a lot more comfortable for this bright new star on the PGA Tour.
