Jordan Spieth Still Leads the 146th British Open

Jordan Spieth Still Leads the 146th British Open July 22, 2017

JordanSpiethYoung phenom Jordan Spieth, from Dallas, Texas, is 11-under par with a three shot lead over Matt Kuchar after three rounds in the British Open. Kuchar has a three shot lead over Brooks Koepka, the U.S. Open winner last month. Tomorrow, Spieth has a chance to make golfing history. If he wins, he will be the first pro golfer under the age of 24 to win three of the four major championships in golf: Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship. His chances are excellent since these leaders are spread out. And Jordan has such a great short game.

RoyalBirkdaleThe venue is Royal Birkdale. This is the tenth time it has hosted the British Open since the 1950s. It is a very good golf course. The fairways are narrow. The gorse off the fairways is worse than ice plant. I played the 1969 World Carling Open there. It was my first test at truly links golf and first in Great Britain. In those days, par was 73 at Royal Birkdale, whereas now it is 70. In that tournament, the weather was atrocious the third round. The wind blew the rain sideways. In those days, I wore glasses. So, I couldn’t keep my glasses dry. It was awful. I hit the ball well and shot a miserable 77. I came back to my hotel room and told my wife, “I will never come back and play golf on this rock [UK] again!” The next day, and final round of the tournament, I shot 69 and changed my tune, telling my wife, “Maybe I’ll be back.”
