Palestinians Try Again to Unite

Yesterday, three Palestinian leaders met in Qatar with its emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, to attempt reconciliation after ten years of feuding. In recent years, Qatar has tried to help Palestinians achieve their aspirations, which is to establish a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. But the division between the Palestinian Authority, which controls Palestinians living in the West Bank, and Hamas, which governs those in the Gaza Strip, has negatively affected the peace … [Read more...]

Egyptian General Who Destroyed Gaza Tunnels Assasinated

Yesterday, militants gunned down Egyptian Army Brigadier General Adel Ragai in front of his home in Cairo, Egypt. He was commander of the Ninth Armored Division that had been deployed in Egypt's chaotic North Sinai, between Gaza and the coastal city of El Arish, the capital of North Sinai. Three militants believed to have committed the killing were seen with assault rifles in a vehicle in front of Ragai's home. For the past three years, ISIS has been seeking to take over the North Sinai … [Read more...]

Gaza Will Become a Worse Nightmare Without Its Tunnels

In 2006, Israel finally relented and unilaterally relinguished possession of the Gaza Strip to Palestinians. But Palestinians were becoming more divided between the secular Palestinian Authority, which operated mostly in the West Bank, and the fiercely religious Hamas that operated almost entirely in the Gaza Strip. Thus, a battle broke out between them in 2007, and Hamas emerged victoriously in control of Gaza, which remains so to this day.Prior to this, Palestinians living in the Gaza … [Read more...]

North Sinai Turmoil and Future Palestine

Current events in the Middle East increasingly support what I proposed for a Palestinian state 25 years ago in my book, Palestine Is Coming: The Revival of Ancient Philistia (1990). (Actually, I wrote a magazine article about it in 1981, but I could not get it published.) Recent evidence supporting my proposal has been the continuing turmoil in the northern Sinai Peninsula between the Gaza Strip and the Wadi el Arish basin 25 miles to the south. An Islamic terrorist group called Sinai … [Read more...]

Will Ancient Philistia Be Revived?

My book, Palestine Is Coming, was published in 1990. Since then, events have continually transpired that make my subtitle for this book look like it might happen--The Revival of Ancient Philistia. When the book was being written, in 1988-89, it was illegal for a U.S. politician or government diplomat to even speak to member of the political organization that had represented the Palestinian people for decades, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), even though the UN had officially … [Read more...]

Palestinians Seek Membership in the Criminal Court of Justice

The U.S.'s concerted efforts at diplomacy in reviving the peace process in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict fell apart early this summer. Since then, matters have signicantly deteriorated, especially because of last week. Israel and the Palestinians are getting farther and farther apart. This past week the Palestinian Authority (PA) applied for membership in the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is located in the Hague, Netherlands. It was the PA's planned move after the UN Security … [Read more...]

Palestinians: Recognize Israel or FAWGETABOUTIT!

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas said last week that on Monday, today, the PA and Hamas would announce details about a unity agreement between them to govern all Palestinians. The PA governs Palestinians in the West Bank, and Hamas governs the Gaza Strip. Hamas is on the U.S. terrorist list, so that the U.S. refuses to talk to Hamas. If this agreement happens, that could jeopardize Palestinians receiving over $100 million dollars per year in aid from the U.S.Abbas has been … [Read more...]

What Will the Palestinians’ New Government Look Like?

A few weeks ago, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas announced that the PA and Hamas had agreed to lay aside their differences and join in a new unity government. Now, they plan to announce it tomorrow and provide details. What will it look like?Abbas said it will consist only of apolitical technocrats, renounce violence, and recognize Israel's right to exist. Wow! What a change. He also said the new government will be headed by current prime minister, Rami Hamdallah, a … [Read more...]
