Preparing for Advent (Patheos Book Club) November 24, 2014

the-season-of-the-nativity-confessions-and-practices-of-an-advent-christmas-ephiphany-extremist-21Sybil MacBeth’s The Season of the Nativity is a colorful, creative book for people who feel exhausted by the mere thought of preparing for Christmas. MacBeth wants us to step back from the busyness and chaos that reign throughout the holidays so that we can appreciate the liturgical seasons and celebrations of Advent, the Nativity, and the Epiphany.

Drawing on her life experiences, MacBeth offers short reflections and practical activities we might use to help make the church’s liturgical seasons liturgically meaningful for us. Her suggestions include making Advent calendars, putting purple lights on the outside of the house (to spark conversations with neighbors), and even fun with Twitter. She also notes biblical passages and shorter works of literature that highlight the seasonal themes.

If you’re looking for spiritual practices and activities to do before and after this Christmas, check out The Season of the Nativity (Paraclete Press).
