It feels auspicious to be inaugurating my brand new Patheos blog at the Solstice. I’ve found it both centering and inspiring to understand more about the ancient solar traditions that predate our electrical age and connect us into the ground and unity of our human experience here on earth. Here is a brief history and overview of the Solstice, followed by a look at the astrology of this year’s turning of the season.
It’s the Summer Solstice at midnight (00:08) June 20 in the UK and 1:08 am Europe, 7:08 pm on the US East Coast. Of course in the Antipodes it is the Winter Solstice and falls at 9:08 am June 21 on the Australian East Coast.
Here’s a link to the page on my web site on the lore and traditions of the Summer Solstice.
The Summer Solstice This Year
The chart for the Solstice is complex, with the Sun moving to emphasise the Uranus Pluto square (exact June 24 for the first of seven passes between now and 2015) signalling more radical changes politically and economically in the coming three months. At least now that Pluto and Uranus have left the very early degrees of Capricorn and Aries respectively, the quarterly ingresses (where the Sun is always at 0 degrees of a cardinal sign) are not as intense as they have been the past three years. So at the collective level, maybe the shocks are not as great, but there is much work to be done, and a tough reality to come to terms with and to act upon.
The Sun is trine Neptune in Pisces, indicating the probability of increased spiritual dialogue and spiritual/metaphysical inclination collectively.
The Moon conjuncts Mercury in Cancer, so lots of communication, lots in the news, much of it to do with women, families, collective finance, public perception of journalism, and national security. None of this is any surprise given what is already going on, but shows that we will have more of the same, and at an intensified level. Moon/Mercury square Saturn, so no great news financially yet.
But on the plus side, this ingress chart shows Jupiter, the South Node and Venus all conjunct in early Gemini, so it’s potentially a great time for people born late May/early June, and the possibility for all of us that some riches from the past become more available. This could mean spiritual riches, but it could also indicate a discovery of some kind that eases global finances.
Celebrating the Solstice
Whatever you are doing this week and wherever you are, I hope you’ll be able to find a moment to tune into the shift of the season, and contemplate where you are at in your life right now and what your priorities are for the coming three month period. We just had a New Moon, so it’s an ideal time to plan and consider your next moves.
With much love and many blessings,
Lara
