Beware the Jelly Creationists

When I was little, my favourite bedtime book was The Fantastic Dinosaur Adventure by Gerald Durrell. Mum enjoyed reading it too, but whenever the story mentioned how many millions of years ago the dinosaurs actually lived, she skipped over those words. When I asked her what she wasn't telling me, she said something like "We don't believe that."At the same time, Mum was quite keen on what creationists call "Gap Theory". Genesis 1:1 says "In the beginning God created the heavens and the e … [Read more...]

Win! Creation ‘science’ banned in UK state-funded nurseries

The headline of Friday's Daily Telegraph screamed "Toddlers at risk from extremists". The British Education Secretary has announced plans to ban teaching creationism is publicly-funded nurseries. What it didn't say is that, although the British Humanist Association (BHA) was the most prominent campaigner against creationism in nurseries, this was originally the subject of a letter-writing campaign by the readers of Leaving Fundamentalism. But I know you wrote the letters, so thank you.We w … [Read more...]

Britney Spears? Is she in our class?

There's another new ACE blogger on the scene. Everyone, say hi to Christina Kelton. In a recent conversation on the Accelerated Christian Education Exposed Facebook group, Christina wrote:I could go on for days with my thoughts on the religious aspect of ACE. Religion aside, I could never stand behind a program that turns out students with diplomas that can't be used. My high school education was not considered valid for the courses that I took within the ACE program in the US. I now need … [Read more...]

Take a lesson from the kids

This is a guest post by Tyler Francke, owner of GodofEvolution.com. It’s not typical (though probably far more common in Accelerated Christian Education schools) that your principal is also your church pastor, but such was the case at the small private school in Oregon that my wife attended from preschool through twelfth grade.Based on her experience, I wouldn’t recommend it. Giving a single man (always a man at ACE schools, of course) such broad and absolute authority over impr … [Read more...]

Creationist educators respond to criticism

CEE hits back! Earlier this month New Statesman published my article "Creationism and the 'conspiracy' of evolution: inside the UK's evangelical schools". Last week I received this email from Dr Greg Hibbins, general manager of Christian Education Europe (Accelerated Christian Education's UK distributor):Dear Mr ScaramangaPlease find attached my letter of response to your article in the New Statesman. I have sent it to the paper and also trust you will publish it in whole and unedited on y … [Read more...]

Evolution is a conspiracy!

I've chalked up another flawless victory and been published in the New Statesman. As I write, the article is the top story on the Statesman's home page. Please share this one. My previous widely-published articles on ACE have been somewhat tabloid in style, all numbered lists and sections in bold. This is an attempt to raise the level of the conversation on the subject. Here's the l … [Read more...]

Whaddaya mean, ‘fundamentalist’?

At one of my recent talks on Bristol, an attendee challenged me on my definition of fundamentalism. And while I still think his definition did a violence to any traditional usage of the term (while mine was, obviously, unassailably correct), he raised an important point. 'Fundamentalist', in modern usage, is essentially a swear word. If you call someone a fundamentalist, you're writing off their views as irrelevant and invalid. At the same time, the word does have a historical meaning, referring … [Read more...]

Attacking science, insulting Islam: the reality of PAC charter schools

By now you'll have seen my Salon article about how charter schools (mostly in Texas) are promoting creationist ideas in a way that seems to violate church-state separation. There are two main curricula discussed: ResponsiveEd and Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum (PAC). Both are offshoots of Accelerated Christian Education (ACE). Of the two, ResponsiveEd seems to be used more widely, but it's hard to get solid information about it. PAC, on the other hand, has kindly uploaded many curriculum … [Read more...]

Is this moral?

Children matriculate into Christian school in dire need of spiritual programing [sic] of their minds to accept and desire the things of Christ. Conditioning, according to Philippians 4:8 (whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure. . . .) breaks down secular programed [sic] ideas, thoughts, and habits alien to Scripture. Little by little, day after day in the temple, things of God hammer away at the worldliness packed into the child's treasure chest of experiences. The carnal nature of … [Read more...]

Parents Against Creationism – Two Big Victories in One Scottish Town

This is a guest post by Paul Braterman, Professor Emeritus, University of North Texas and Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Chemistry, University of Glasgow. Paul is a leading member of the British Centre for Science Education and enemy of creationism wherever it arises, and the author of From Stars to Stalagmites. He was the one who sent me the photos for my recent discussion of creationism in a Scottish primary school. Here, he expands on that information to reveal the extent of creationist in … [Read more...]
