Film Comment Critics Agree with Christianity Today Critics for #1 Movie of 2005!! March 18, 2005

What a strange new world I live in.

The critics at Film Comment have voted Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as the #1 film of 2005.

That’s the same movie voted #1 by the critics at Christianity Today!

In fact, the two groups agree on FIVE of the top ten!

I couldn’t be happier about this. Thinking back to the kind of movies celebrated in so-called “Christian” film circles when I was a kid, I can only say: We’ve come a long way, baby, back to knowing how to look at and understand art.

Don’t misunderstand: I’m not saying that Christian film critics need to choose the same film as mainstream critics. But for decades, the religious press treated mainstream cinema as the Plague. They celebrated religious propaganda, and anything that involved reflections of the world’s brokenness, or that explored spiritual questions, or that reflected the perspectives of other minds and imaginations… that was all corrupt and contagious.

At last, the dialogue within Christian circles is showing signs of real transformation.

And Eternal Sunshine is, indeed, a great, rich, imaginative piece of work.
