Whitest Christmas Ever.

We're snowed in for Christmas. We've canceled our trip to Portland to spend the holiday with my family. We're doubtful that we can get to a local Christmas eve gathering. Our church has canceled all Christmas services. And it's a good thing I got home from Cincinnati, because an icy arctic blast has provoked my friends there to cancel their own Christmas parties. Be safe, everybody. We have everything we need in our own homes and hearts. No need to make that last-minute trip to … [Read more...]

Browser: Of Billboards, Brando, and the Best of 2008 (Updated 10:25AM)

NPR has the story of Rev. Gloria White Hammond, who brings a "ministry of healing" to those who are suffering in Darfur. Today, as I read this story of faith, love, and compassion, I'm reminded that Washington State's Governor Gregoire has allowed the following statement to be posted beside a Nativity Scene in the State Capitol" "There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds." Then why do the hopeless turn to the … [Read more...]

Ted writes: What's your opinion of The Shack? I'm disturbed by the fact that so many Christians are buying a book that portrays God as a woman. It's dangerous to expose ourselves to books that preach a false theology. … [Read more...]

A Charlie Brown Christmas Podcast

Nuclearity has just posted a very special podcast. I had the privilege of contributing to this, but that's not why I'm linking to it. I was moved as I listened to a wide variety of people share their views on why A Charlie Brown Christmas stands apart as a treasure of holiday storytelling. Take a few minutes and listen to this remarkable program. [2013 UPDATE: The recording has been moved to this location.] The other guests include: Robert Short, author of The Gospel According to … [Read more...]

A Few Thoughts on Christmas Day 2006

Today, as the same old Christmas carols played, one line rang out as if it was brand new for me. "How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given." There have been precious few moments of quiet in my year, as I have set in motion so much sound and fury in my own life that I can hardly hear myself think. In such a state of self-induced hysteria, I'm almost sure to miss Him when he comes again and again into my presence... through gestures of grace, through bread and wine, through the … [Read more...]

Have you heard? Sufjan Stevens has a new release.

Someone asked me why I hadn't blogged yet about the new Sufjan Stevens release, and my answer is, um, well, I've been too busy listening to it. In fact, Sufjan doesn't just have one new volume of material... no, he has FIVE new volumes of material. And they're all Christmas albums. They're new, that is, to those who haven't been tuning in through his fan club over the last few years. I've been listening to the first three volumes for a while now. But at last, they're packaged up with some … [Read more...]
