Further Thanks to Christianity Today for a Generous Send-Off

Today's unexpected notes from the team at Christianity Today have been a tremendous blessing to me at the end of a trying week. I am deeply grateful. And thanks to those of you who left comments for me there as well. All I ever did was ramble on, ad nauseum, about an art form that I love. That it has come to anything at all is powerful evidence, to me anyway, that there's a creative, resourceful God in charge of things. I've learned as much from my colleagues and readers on this journey as I … [Read more...]

Thanks to the Team at Christianity Today

Just an FYI: Due to my present overload of writing responsibilities and other various pressures and stresses, I've decided to surrender my participation at CT Movies. My latest Through a Screen Darkly column, "Feasting on Films", will be my last contribution there for the foreseeable future (although I certainly won't close the door, as circumstances may change). … [Read more...]

“Knowing” Remarks from Ebert and… Well… Others

Roger Ebert bothered many film critics and moviegoers when he turned in a four-star review of Alex Proyas's new film Knowing. Today, he's defending his rave review. Meanwhile, Christianity Today's review was posted last week -- more high praise. But that review inspired backlash too. Here are a few of my favorite lines from the comments of CT Movies readers: "Although there are some shorts which may show a little cleavage, it's never done sexually..." Shorts which show cleavage? I've … [Read more...]

Looking Closer Breaks New Ground in September

In September, I'm rearranging my weekly schedule to find a better balance. Friends have begun to point out that I'm wearing myself out. If I keep up this pace of office work, review writing, and book writing, I'm headed for serious trouble with my health and my spirit. I need more rest, more exercise, more time at home, more time with Anne. And I need some space to breathe, read, and soak up some inspiration. I also want to devote more time and attention to The Auralia Thread, so I have no … [Read more...]

Compromising Caspian?

Today at CT Movies, witness Mark Moring challenging Douglas Gresham on Prince Caspian. And Gresham's answers are just fine... that is, if you aren't concerned that the movie be true to the book, and if you thought the film version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was just spiffy. Gresham doesn't seem too concerned about asking "What would C.S. Lewis think about these adaptations?" His answer: He's concerned about what the Holy Spirit would think. So... we should blame the Holy Spirit … [Read more...]
