127 Hours (2010)

[This review by Jeffrey Overstreet was originally published at Seattle Pacific University's Response.]-Imagine falling into a crack in the earth, and getting trapped there for several days, your arm pinned by an immovable boulder. Such a calamity would probably test your faith. Would you question the existence of God? Cry out to him? Give up on him?Danny Boyle’s film about Aron Ralston’s ordeal is supposed to be about the long hours of the climber’s struggle for survival while stuck … [Read more...]

Specials: Bourne, Batman, Potter, Wenders, Derrickson, Bjork, Sunshine, and more.

A few quick notes and links from my flurry of catching up:I can't believe it. After all of the buzz, the hype, the excitement, I've seen The Bourne Ultimatum, and I'm really, really disappointed. It's the least of the three... basically 112 minutes of action, with a plot thread that introduces absolutely ZERO new ideas to the series. Don't get me wrong... the action is slick and exhilarating. And it's still the best sequel of the summer. But the storytellers have utterly failed to take … [Read more...]

Doug Cummings on “Sunshine”

Doug Cummings turned in his last batch of reviews from the Los Angeles Film Festival today, and they include his response to Danny Boyle's sci-fi thriller Sunshine.I've heard from one of you that Danny Boyle's Sunshine is the best film you've seen this year.Cummings disagrees. I couldn't have been more disappointed by the film, which I found to be tedious, empty, and a complete waste of time. Sure, it's got elaborate digital effects, great set design, and a thundering soundtrack, but … [Read more...]

Millions (2004)

This review was originally published at Christianity Today on March 11, 2005. -A particularly reliable source once said, "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." When he said this, he was referring to children like Damian.Damian is the young hero of Millions, and you've never encountered a hero quite like him. Unlike the Bart Simpsons and Malcolms in the middle of most family entertainment, Damian is not a … [Read more...]

Danny Boyle: The Looking Closer Interview (Feb. 2005)

As Danny Boyle's new film Slumdog Millionaire is cleaning up at this year's various surveys of film critics, perhaps it's a good time to revisit the conversation I enjoyed with Boyle in February 2005 at the release of Millions, which is my favorite of his films (so far... I'm seeing Slumdog Millionaire this week), and still my favorite film of 2005.So... here's a link to my review of Millions, a Christmas movie I highly recommend. And here's my interview with Boyle, which ran in an … [Read more...]
