The Arts & Faith Top 100 Films list, hosted by IMAGE journal, is the best place to start for planning your next 100 Netflix rentals. (Here's the introduction I wrote for it.) Dick Staub, Greg Wolfe, Jennie Spohr, and I talked about the list at Hales Pub and Brewery, before a live audience. God and Hollywood: Have Movies Improved Since “The Passion of the Christ”

One week ago, beer-drinkin' believers gathered at Hale's Brewery in Seattle to discuss The Passion of the Christ, "faith-based filmmaking," and whether Mel Gibson's movie heralded a new era for Christian filmmaking (as so many believed it would), or a new era in mediocrity and proselytizing. Sorry, the beer's all gone. But the discussion still lives! Listen to Dick Staub, Greg Wright, Jennie Spohr, and me as we talk it over and respond to challenging questions at The Kindlings Muse! Here's … [Read more...]

Opus on “300″, and More on Why I’m Not Getting in Line

I'm responding yet again about the movie 300 for this simple reason: I have been baited, again and again, into extremely violent or explicit films that proved to be empty... and worse, even abusive to audiences. I have been told, "You have got to see it!", and I've been promised that all of the graphic material was justified because of what it meant. "It's about fighting for freedom! It's about fighting for a higher cause!" Most of the time, I've regretted it. While a character or two might … [Read more...]

Dick Staub on “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Amazing Grace”

When I first met Dick Staub, he was a Christian radio talk-show host who knew how to perform compelling, gracious, unpredictable interviews. Then I got hooked on his blog, where he ponders the state of Christianity and culture... Staublog. Then he went off to start a whole new venture... The Kindlings Muse... leading conversations about faith, culture, politics, theology, and art, in the public forum of Hale's Pub and Brewery in Seattle, Washington. And his new book is called The … [Read more...]

Specials: Staub. Art quotes. Capote. More news.

Today's specials: Dick Staub says "I believe..." Wow. Right on. And speaking of inspirational writing... Jeff Berryman has just given a nod to what may be the biggest archive of art-related quotations on the Web. Phillip Seymour Hoffman stars in Capote. More film-related news has just been posted in Reel News by Josh Hurst. Feedback: This letter came in to Christianity Today this week and made my day: The Brothers Grimm. Too few movie reviewers give such attention to … [Read more...]

Dick Staub’s new book: "Christian Wisdom of the Jedi Masters"!

My friend Dick Staub recently impressed the heck out of me all over again with his eloquence on the subject of art and faith when we joined a panel discussion for Christians in the Theatre Arts. In fact, the conversation between us, writer/actor Jeff Berryman, and actor Grant Goodeve was probably the most exciting dialogue on faith and art I've experienced. I wish I'd recorded it, because I want transcripts of everything those guys said. … [Read more...]
