Movieguide: Bringing so-called "movie reviews" with so-called "high biblical standards" to FOX News

Here's the breaking news about Movieguide... And here's a link to my recent post that should be more than sufficient in explaining why this is awful news. … [Read more...]

Ongoing Lies and Distortions from Movieguide

Exposing the latest exhibition of the ignorance that pollutes so much of the material published at Movieguide, Steven Greydanus published this article about The Rite and Movieguide's review of it. … [Read more...]

An Enemy of Serious Film Criticism?

Here's Brett McCracken on Movieguide's ongoing campaigns of preposterous "film criticism." Earlier, Mark Moring's post at CT... in which the comments became lively, especially when Movieguide's Tom Snyder showed up to call Moring's post "a silly article" without sufficiently answering any of the problems exposed.   … [Read more...]

UPDATE: Christianity Today Critiques Movieguide’s “Hollywood Stimulus Plan”

In a display of uncharacteristically poor judgment, The Wall Street Journal has published the "Report to the Industry" by Movieguide's Ted Baehr and Tom Snyder. Did the editors there actually read the flimsy claims being made? Film enthusiasts and critics everywhere, Christian and otherwise, went... huh?! Mark Moring at Christianity Today has posted a response today, but not before these had appeared: Dan Savage, Jim Emerson, and Glenn Kenny. Granted, some of those mainstream … [Read more...]

Reader Mail: Ballast! Ghost Town! Ted Baehr!

BEHOLD... BALLAST! A little while back, you posted a trailer for Lance Hammer's Ballast on your blog, which I watched and decided to check out sometime. To my delight, Ballast just had its Canadian premiere at the Vancouver Film Festival, and I was able to catch that screening. I've posted my review of the film at my blog: http://filmatical.wordpress.com/ Ballast is an excellent film, and I want to thank you for putting it onto my radar. By the way, I've started reading Auralia's Colors … [Read more...]

Film Forum: Tropic Thunder, Transsiberian, Star Wars – The Clone Wars

This is collection of reviews that I found interesting and helpful. The collection will be revised as I find more notable assessments online. Feel free to submit more reviews, or even your own, in the comments below. TROPIC THUNDER Anthony Lane - New Yorker: After the dazzle of the early scenes, something droops and flags in Tropic Thunder. ... As a jab at the movie business, Tropic Thunder is flailing and unfocussed, hardly in the league of The Player, and if you want an expos√© of … [Read more...]

What Does Movieguide Really Want?

At Christ and Pop Culture, Movieguide reportedly has "the last word." Here's what they want: We support a return to the Moral Code of Decency and the vetting of all scripts for movies going to public theater and DVD retail within 20 years, if not in 3-5 years. That would probably include the elimination of all R-rated and NC-17 content as well as most PG-13 content. We also look forward to Christian/biblical hegemony within the industry. If this ministry had much more support, our progress … [Read more...]

My Oscar predictions, Christian Oscars(?), and Left Behind

If "Falling Slowly" from Once doesn't win, it's just another confirmation that the Academy voters don't know anything about good songwriting. (Remember when Celine Dion's Titanic histrionics beat Elliott Smith's Good Will Hunting song?) But okay, enough already. I never do very well at this game, but as a film critic, I'm required to submit my predictions for Sunday night's glamour-bash. So here we go... … [Read more...]

Is “There Will Be Blood” a Film for “Narrow-Minded Bigots”?

eli sunday there will be blood

"The realistic, gritty atmosphere created by screenwriter/director Paul Thomas Anderson and actor Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview is tremendous. It is practically ruined, however, by Anderson's evil caricature of Eli, the revenge-minded preacher, and the over-the-top, unrealistic performance of Paul Dano as Eli. In fact, THERE WILL BE BLOOD is one of the most mean-spirited, anti-Christian, superficial, and poorly played portrayals of religion ever created in movie history. God knows there … [Read more...]
