Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Five years ago this week, I was so excited about seeing Harrison Ford return to the role of Indiana Jones — and even more excited about seeing Karen Allen return to the role of Marion Ravenwood — that I had a great time watching Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.Sure, it was disappointing in some ways. But I was so glad to be in the company of Indy and Marion that I gave the film a very positive rating and hastily turned in my review to Christianity Today. Then I saw the f … [Read more...]

Lincoln (2012)

If you admire Abraham Lincoln, if you rate Daniel Day-Lewis as a great actor, and if Steven Spielberg movies are major events in your moviegoing life, then you, like me, have found it difficult to wait for Spielberg's new film, Lincoln. Who wouldn't want to see the actor who starred in My Left Foot and The Last of the Mohicans, who inspired us as Gerry Conlon (In the Name of the Father) and disturbed us as Daniel Plainview (There Will Be Blood) work with the director of Schindler's List to bring … [Read more...]

Abraham Lincoln: A Trailer, A Speech, and “Divine Providence”

Yes, the trailer is here. And it looks... well... huh. To me, this preview makes it look like a big sappy Spielberg movie that is reverent to a fault. It looks like it takes place in the same world as Amistad, where the themes are louder than the details, and everything is filmed so that characters look more like noble wax museum representations than living, breathing human beings.Of course, this is just a trailer. Perhaps the film will be better than this trailer makes it look.Since … [Read more...]

Indiana Jones and the Fall of My Favorite Hero, Part One: King of Heroes?

My favorite adventure movie of all time is coming to IMAX screens for a short while, a special release to get consumers charged up about the approaching Indiana Jones blu-ray collection.Since the movie has risen again, I thought I'd resurrect something of my own... an essay that I wrote about Indiana Jones for a Christian publication a couple of years ago. The editor decided this wouldn't suit his publication's purposes, so I put it away and forgot about it. Stumbling onto it this week, I … [Read more...]

War Horse (2011)

[This review was originally published at Good Letters, the blog hosted by Image.]•Was there a horse story in your childhood? My wife Anne cherished Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty, C.W. Anderson’sThe Blind Connemara, and Marguerite Henry’s Stormy and White Stallion of Lipizza. When she wasn’t reading about horses, she was riding them. In the saddle by the time she was in elementary school, Anne rode both English and Western. My favorite photograph from her childhood, she’s astride a leaping … [Read more...]
