Why Is “The New World” on 2005 Best-Lists If Malick Finished It in 2006?

The final cut of Terrence Malick's The New World was not finished until January 2006.It was not shown to critics in Seattle until January 18, 2006.The cut that was shown to Oscar voters in a rather rushed attempt to get an Oscar nomination was not the finished film. And yet, critics everywhere are counting The New World as a 2005 picture. … [Read more...]

For Malick-philes only…

If you love The New World and are curious about the differences between the theatrical version and the cut that was shown to Oscar voters before the release, The House Next Door has posted a description of the differences. They are not nearly as drastic as I was led to believe. But neither one of these represent the special edition cut that is rumored to be in the works. … [Read more...]

One thing Wim Wenders said…

My interview with Wim Wenders will be up at Christianity Today Movies in a few days, but I will tell you this now: He praises Terrence Malick's The New World as perhaps the most powerful big screen experience he's enjoyed since 2001: A Space Odyssey. What's that? It just left the theaters in your neighborhood? You missed it? That's okay. Most of America did. … [Read more...]

The New World, and those who admire it religiously

The Village Voice's J. Hoberman says that The New World is the most beloved film of the last year... not because the most people loved it, but because those who do love it are devoted with the most passionate intensity. … [Read more...]

GreenCine: More on how much "The New World" rules, and a curious Wong Kar-Wai bit

Lots of great stuff up at GreenCine, including: So The New World won't be a hit. That's to be expected. "More disheartening is to see a certain cache of movie writers come swarming out to greet Malick's latest as an exercise in how arch and unimpressed they can act in the face of a work that — whatever one's opinion of its qualities — shouldn't be denied its singularity," writes Nick Pinkerton in Stop Smiling. "An American history written in intimate, undistilled emotion; an attentive, tonally p … [Read more...]

Will You Be One of the Unfortunate Zillions Who Misses "The New World"?

The New World's lack of Oscar nominations shows how utterly blind and unqualified Academy voters really are. This is nothing new, I know. But just because the Academy members make a habit of shoving our faces in their ignorance and susceptibility to hysteria and political hype doesn't mean it doesn't hurt each time they insult and misguide the many who think their judgments are actually meaningful. Some of you have told me I shouldn't care about this. Do I care much about the Academy? No. But … [Read more...]

Chattaway on "The New World." And no, we’re not the same person.

Today, for the first time in our... golly, ten-year friendship? ... I received an email from someone asking if Peter Chattaway was one of my pseudonyms.Wow.We do show up in a lot of the same places online and in print. But we frequently disagree on films, and sometimes clash mightily. This time, though, we're both recommending that you rush out and see The New World. My review was posted earlier today. In 2006, it's going to be a hard movie to beat on my Year's Best list. Now, … [Read more...]

My review of Terrence Malick’s "The New World"

I worked on this review until 1 a.m., got up at 5 a.m. and kept working on it. Then, realizing I had 2,500 words, I had to cut it back to the word-limit: 1,500.I didn't quite make it.So it's likely that, in the haze of my sleep deprivation, I may have missed a thing or two.But anyway, here is it is... my review of the I love the most from the past year, maybe two... … [Read more...]

"The New World" Conundrum

Okay... I'm stuck. Most critics groups, and the Oscars, will consider Terrence Malick's "The New World" a 2005 release, because it screened for some critics a few weeks ago.But the final cut, which is much shorter, includes footage that wasn't in the longer cut, and is apparently quite a different film altogether, was just finished a few days ago... in 2006.So what do I do?Is this my favorite film of 2005... which it is, if it must be listed as a 2005 release?Or shall I go … [Read more...]
