Read it and weep: U2 and Arcade Fire onstage together…

arcadefireu2

Yep, that's Bono kneeling toward the right, smack in the middle of Arcade Fire.U2 and Arcade Fire played together last night, performing Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart."For those that were there, it must have been Thanksgiving all over again. For me, Thanksgiving is officially ended, unless someone can find me a recording of this performance. … [Read more...]

Bono on the Cover of the New Rolling Stone

Thanks to Josh Hurst for bringing THIS to my attention. As is so often the case, Bono gets in some quotable stuff about his faith. Do you pray or have any religious practices?I try to take time out of every day, in prayer and meditation. I feel as at home in a Catholic cathedral as in a revival tent. I also have enormous respect for my friends who are atheists, most of whom are, and the courage it takes not to believe. How big an influence is the Bible on your songwriting? How much do … [Read more...]

U2 on Conan O’Brien

I stayed up until the wee hours to see a most bizarre spectacle... U2 on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. While it was far from a total success, the bumpy and embarrassing moments were worth it for the highs, which included performances of "All Because of You," "Original of the Species," "Stuck in a Moment," and "Vertigo" (which was cut off by the network as the show ran out of time... a painful severance indeed.)More here. And much, much more here.If you saw it, what'd you think? Did … [Read more...]

Today's specials:THE REAL STEVE MARTIN ... THE ONE WORTH SEEING... IS BACK Steve Martin's upcoming romantic comedy Shopgirl wasn't very high on my must-see list. Until now.BEHIND THE SCENES OF MARK HELPRIN'S STORYTELLING Harvard Magazine investigates the house of Helprin, my favorite novelist."WE'RE JUNKIES, BUT WE'RE NOT THE SAME..." For those who are still telling me Bono isn’t a Christian…

Recently I spoke in church about the "ministry" of U2 through their music and through their involvement in aid for Africa. Afterward, I heard from someone arguing the same thing I've heard for decades... that Bono may use a lot of religious references, but he's really just a rock star who's sold out for the love of money.Frankly, I'm not very interested in arguments about the state of Bono's soul. That's not my business. But I *am* excited that the biggest rock star in the world uses his … [Read more...]

Contactmusic reports U2 to re-record "Pop" album!

U2 in Church … A Wonderful Night

I had to fight back some serious surges of emotion tonight as a dream came true for me. I'd always wanted to share with my church what it is about U2 that moves me so much, what it is about their work that has transformed my life and drawn me closer to God.My pastor invited me to do just that this week, and tonight I was given the better part of an hour to tell U2's story, to draw the attention of the congregation to the poetry of Bono's lyrics, to talk about how cleverly and brilliantly … [Read more...]

U2 – Live in Seattle last night: A great show, slightly "dismantled" halfway through

I've seen U2 perform live four times now, and I've seen the film "Rattle and Hum" almost ten times on the big screen, along with countless DVD viewings, so I know what they're capable of.Thus, I had high hopes about what would take place in KeyArena last night for the "Vertigo" tour. And when the band took the stage with a searing, blistering, blow-out-the-back-wall version of "Love and Peace Or Else," I was once again swept up on waves of energy and light. It was a euphoric experience as … [Read more...]
