GLSEN Black History Month: Black Heroes of the LGBT Community

In the midst of your celebrations of February’s Black History Month, take some time to learn about African-American LGBTQ individuals who helped shape our history.

For a diverse selection of LGBT African-Americans  from a variety of backgrounds (sports, politics, activism, comedy, etc), check out GLSEN’s Black Heroes of the LGBT Community.

If you’re interested in writers specifically, glbtq, Inc has resources that give a history of works written by African-American gay men and lesbian women, as well as a general overview of LGBT voices in the Harlem Renaissance.

Chicago’s Legacy Walk has an interactive map of its outdoor museum, and includes several African-American among its diverse grouping of LGBTQ individuals who have contributed to history.

If you are (or know) a student involved in GSA (Gay Straight Alliance), get involved in #BlackFutureLegends Month, empowering youth activists to examine African-American individuals and movements that have inspired them.

And if you missed it,
here’s Google’s excellent Doodle celebrating African-American gay poet and activist Langston Hughes:

Much love!
