Historian Kevin Kruse Takes Down Conservatives’ Betsy DeVos / Ruby Bridges Comparison

So, yesterday afternoon, this happened:We are apparently that far through the looking-glass.The cartoon refers to an incident last week when a handful of protestors blocked DeVos from entering a public school in Washington, D.C. DeVos was ultimately able to enter the school. Many Democrats later condemned any efforts to prevent DeVos from entering public schools, arguing that it is important for DeVos to gain greater understanding of the positive work done by public schools. And yet, … [Read more...]

About Those “Millennials Are the Worst Drivers” Articles

This morning USA Today posted an article titled "Millennial drivers are highway hazards, survey shows." Because I am a Millennial, and because I try to keep my finger on the pulse of Millennial-bashing, I clicked through---and quickly wished I hadn't. Millennial drivers are the worst. That’s not just their elders talking. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found 88% of drivers 19- to 24-years-old acknowledged engaging in risky behavior such as texting while driving, running red lights or s … [Read more...]

On Calls for Homeschooling in Response to DeVos

Reportedly, some progressive circles have seen calls for homeschooling in response to Betsy DeVos' confirmation as United States Secretary of Education. I’ve added a “chatter” tab under my blog banner that will direct readers to these discussion threads, so no one will have to wo … [Read more...]

Voice in the Wind: Channelling My Inner Latin Nerd

A Voice in the Wind, pp. 34-47Rivers switches back and forth from one character's perspective to another, but not in the jerky unclear way in which Farris did so, and always in the third person. This can make for interesting reading---it gave us perspective into the thoughts and perception of the soldier who carried off Hadassah and her dying sister---but it can also be revealing in other ways.During the beginning of this section, we are shown the perspective of Severus Albanus Majorian, … [Read more...]
