Upon hearing the name Gwen smiled to herself, "I guess I'm not in Spokane anymore." Rudolph the Bullied Reindeer

It's mid-December, and that means there's Christmas music everywhere. Some traditional Christmas songs have come under scrutiny lately, and conversations about whether Baby It's Cold Outside is a song about date rape (and the song's relationship to rape culture) have proliferated in recent years. I want to talk about another Christmas song---Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Anonymous Tip: Peter Breaks the Rules

A Review Series of Anonymous Tip, by Michael FarrisPp. 456-459We're still at the Supreme Court. Peter goes on, this time talking about the tampering allegations. At the end of his time he almost forgets the standard final words and starts to walk back to his seat, but remembers just in time. There was a brief titter among the lawyers section for his rookie error at the very end. But every knowledgeable person in the courtroom was deeply impressed with all other aspects of the maiden … [Read more...]

“What Would Jesus Say if He Saw You Fighting Like That?”

When I was a child growing up in an evangelical household, my mother would frequently admonish my siblings and I when we were fighting by telling us to imagine that Jesus was standing right there with us. Would we fight in front of Jesus? What would Jesus think of our squabbles, and of how we were treating each other? We would look at each other guiltily and stop fighting---at least until later, when mom was out of the room. Today, for the first time, I found myself tempted to ask the same thing … [Read more...]
