A Summary of Allegations against Bill Gothard and IBLP

It has been nearly two years since Bill Gothard stepped down from leadership at his ministry, the Institute for Basic Life Principles (IBLP), amid a growing number of accusations that he sexually harassed and molested girls and young women in his employ. This past October, a group of individuals filed a negligence lawsuit against IBLP. This lawsuit has been amended, and Bill Gothard is now named as well. This week, Homeschoolers Anonymous obtained the text of the lawsuit, which involves … [Read more...]

Jonathan and Alison Schumm Abuse Case Raises Questions

Given my interest in homeschool reform, I am familiar with many if not most of the entries at the Coalition for Responsible Home Education's Homeschooling's Invisible Children database. This database was started by homeschool alumni concerned about the role homeschooling can play in intensifying and hiding abuse by allowing abusive parents to isolate their children. (I suppose this is where I add the caveat that I am not anti-homeschooling, just pro-accountability.)Anyway, I found the most r … [Read more...]

Let’s Talk about Rachel Dolezal’s Parents

By now you have surely all heard of Rachel Dolezal, who resigned earlier this week from her position as head of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP after her parents revealed that she is in fact white. For years now, Rachel had been passing herself off as black. What Rachel did is inexcusable. She lied to people and violated their trust, she engaged in cultural appropriation and perhaps even plagiarism, and she used her assumed blackness to her advantage and for her own personal gain.I refuse t … [Read more...]

Fifty Shades of Disagreement: Evangelicals and Feminists on Fifty Shades of Grey

I've avoided discussing Fifty Shades of Grey, but I do feel the need to touch on a specific aspect of the controversy that surrounds the book (and now, the film). Namely, I'm fascinated that feminists and evangelical Christians have been the book's most vocal critics. The two would seem unlikely allies! But then, while both groups have tended to condemn Fifty Shades of Grey as toxic, they aren't truly allies in this, because they oppose the books for completely different reasons. Feminists speak … [Read more...]

The Pennington Point on Adult Children, Maturity, and Drivers Licenses

It appears Lisa of the Pennington Point has now taken her entire site down. As you may remember, Lisa began deleting posts on Wednesday after her daughter, Alecia Faith, went public with the message that her parents were preventing her from proving her identity. It seems Lisa has realized that her posts---especially those on parenting adult children---seem rather to corroborate Alecia Faith's story. Fortunately, we have urls and the wayback machine. To quote a friend of mine, "don't they know th … [Read more...]

The Tony Jones Affair: Releasing the Documents

As of today, R.L. Stollar has released a variety of hitherto private documents on Tony Jones and Julie McMahon. As you may remember, Tony Jones is a leader within Emergent Christianity, a sort of newer, hipper, updated evangelicalism. His ex-wife, Julie McMahon, has accused him of abusing her, and while the divorce took place in 2008 and 2009 and the allegations are longstanding, they have only recently gained attention, in large part because Tony was intent on squashing them. The … [Read more...]

I Stand with Alecia Pennington

I have spent some time reading Alecia Faith Pennington's story. First, I watched her short video, which you can see below:For those of you who didn't watch the video, Alecia explained that she doesn't have a birth certificate or social security number, and can't get either because her parents are refusing to cooperate. She further explained that without these documents she can't get a driver's license or a job, much less attend college or vote. I'd like to say I'm horrified, but I'm not, … [Read more...]
