Why We Need to Talk about Narcissism: Tony Jones Edition

Rev._Dr._Tony_Jones

I have grown increasingly uncomfortable with the Tony Jones situation over the last week, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to weigh in again. By word of background, Tony is a leader in the emergent church movement, a branch of evangelical Christianity strives to be less judgmental and more open, works to create space for women and LGBT individuals, makes use of new styles of worship, and focuses on personal connection with the divine. Recently, Tony's ex-wife Julie has gone public with … [Read more...]

How HSLDA Talks About Abuse

child-551881_1280

In 2012, HSLDA opposed a New Jersey bill that would have allowed the Division of Family and Youth Services (DFYS) to determine whether children under their "care, supervision, or custody" should be prohibited from homeschool. The main reason this bill was introduced is that children who are homeschooled are not seen regularly by mandatory reporters in the way children who attend school are, and therefore children who are vulnerable or at risk of abuse may benefit from being in school. A perusal … [Read more...]

On Responding to Abuse Allegations

RHE pic

I write a lot about abuse scandals in conservative Christian circles, such as those involving Doug Phillips and Bill Gothard. But it occurs to me that should be willing to write about similar situations within progressive Christian circles as well. If I ignore problems in groups that agree with me while taking on problems in groups I disagree with, I have a double standard. But there's another reason, too, that I want to write today about the current controversy surrounding Tony Jones, Rachel He … [Read more...]

The Longsuffering Godly Abused Wife

One thing we read a lot about in Created To Be His Help Meet was how to win an unsaved of sinning husband. Debi's basic advice was to submit, to be subservient, and to obey with a smile. I recently came upon a blog post from this past summer by a woman who claims she followed this advice, and successfully won over her porn-addicted husband. Let's take a look, shall we?The author begins by describing her childhood and teenage years at length. She writes that she was the target of bullying, a … [Read more...]

Adrian Peterson and Black Parenting

born in bondage

Several of my commenters have pointed out that there's a racial dimension important in understanding the Adrian Peterson situation. This isn't about saying that what Peterson did in abusing his son was okay, but rather that it's important to understand the context within which black parents make their disciplinary decisions. As a white woman, I don't feel qualified to speak to this directly, but I want to point to several articles I've seen written on this dimension over the past few days. For … [Read more...]

James Dobson and Adrian Peterson

j_dobson

Two days ago, Focus on the Family's Jared Pingleton condemned Adrian Peterson's abuse of his son but defended corporal punishment. Yesterday I explained that the words Pingleton used to justify "appropriate" corporal punishment are the same words abusers use to justify their abuse. In the comments on that post, a reader pointed out, using quotes, that in the punishment he delivered Peterson was simply following the advice of Focus on the Family founder James Dobson himself. I looked up the qu … [Read more...]

Failing to Understand the Dynamics of Abuse: Focus on the Family on Adrian Peterson and Corporal Punishment

adrian-peterson-son-at-training-camp-9

Yesterday, Time Magazine's parenting section featured an article by Focus on the Family's Jared Pingleton. The article, titled "Spanking Can Be an Appropriate Form of Discipline," addresses the controversy surrounding Adrian Peterson's suspension from the Minnesota Vikings on pending child abuse charges after leaving open lacerations on his son. In his article, Pingleton makes a case for corporal punishment while clearly calling Peterson's actions abuse.Pingleton begins his article with this … [Read more...]
