Two New Pieces on Christianity and Child Abuse

Ryan Stollar of Homeschool Alumni Reaching Out (HARO) has been knocking it out of the park lately. I deeply appreciate his advocacy and his willingness to take on big names in his efforts to prevent child abuse. Today I want to take a moment to highlight his two latest pieces, one posted on the HARO website and one posted on HARO's Homeschoolers Anonymous (HA) project website.First is Stollar's HARO piece, How We Marginalize Abuse Survivors: Valuing Forgiveness Over Protection. What's a … [Read more...]

Bill Gothard and the Dynamics of Abuse

Yesterday I found out that a Catholic priest who was accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl decades ago has been made director of a teen pregnancy center. This made me think about all of the ways abusers within the church gain renewed access to positions of power (I'm sure it happens outside of the church as well, but this is the area I'm most familiar with). Curious, I looked up Bill Gothard to double check precisely what he's doing today. I arrived at www.billgothard.com. The website is … [Read more...]

Fundamentalist Leader Bill Gothard Threatens to Sue the Women Accusing Him of Sexually Molesting Them as Teens

Last October, ten women filed a negligence lawsuit against the Institute for Basic Life Principles (IBLP), a fundamentalist Christian organization that put on conferences for families, produced Christian-based homeschool curriculum, and often employed the teenage children of its followers. In January this lawsuit was amended to also name Bill Gothard, IBLP's founder and president until his resignation in March 2014 amid accusations that he had sexually harassed and molested dozens of teenage g … [Read more...]

Bill Gothard’s Disturbing Slavery Apology

Bill Gothard has been accused of sexual harassment and abuse by literally dozens of women, most of whom were teens under his care at the time the incidents occurred, but while these accusations have forced him to step down from his position with the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), they haven't prevented him from starting a new ministry, Life Purpose Power Teams. What exactly is this new ministry? The website talks a lot about rhemas, prayer, and accountability partners. According to … [Read more...]

10 Revelations in the Lawsuit against Bill Gothard and IBLP

Last week, I published a summary of the allegations included in an ongoing lawsuit against fundamentalist guru Bill Gothard and the Institute for Basic Life Principles, which he founded in the 1980s and spent three decades running. The lawsuit focuses on Bill Gothard and IBLP's negligence in failing to report abuse and failing to train their employees to recognize and report abuse, and at its center are allegations that Bill Gothard spent decades grooming, sexually harassing, and molesting te … [Read more...]

A Summary of Allegations against Bill Gothard and IBLP

It has been nearly two years since Bill Gothard stepped down from leadership at his ministry, the Institute for Basic Life Principles (IBLP), amid a growing number of accusations that he sexually harassed and molested girls and young women in his employ. This past October, a group of individuals filed a negligence lawsuit against IBLP. This lawsuit has been amended, and Bill Gothard is now named as well. This week, Homeschoolers Anonymous obtained the text of the lawsuit, which involves … [Read more...]

Bill Gothard Defenders Center Obedience

Bill Gothard was taken down largely as a result of efforts by a website named Recovering Grace. This website was founded and run by alumni of Bill Gothard's various ministry. They initially intended to focus on his theology and argue that he taught a pernicious brand of legalism that ignored or overshadowed the grace of God. Hence the name Recovering Grace. Ultimately, Gothard's downfall was ensured as first one, then two, then dozens of women came to the Recovering Grace team with allegations … [Read more...]
